[01] LEADERS ISSUE MESSAGES MARKING WORLD POPULATION DAYPresident Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc yesterday issued messages marking World Population Day. Noting that Turkey’s rapid population growth had recently begun to slow, Sezer warned however that the current rate was still very high in terms of providing all the citizens with education, health and social services, and raising people’s income levels. Erdogan stated that the goal of his government was to help temper a rising population by creating new opportunities to reach higher standards of living for all citizens. For his part, Arinc emphasized that rapid population growth was Turkey’s one of biggest problems and was pressuring the country’s natural resources. "This rapid population growth constitutes a serious obstacle to development,” he added. /Milliyet/[02] GUL ATTENDSCOMMEMORATION CEREMONY AS WORLD MARKS 10th ANNIVERSARY OF SREBRENICAWorld leaders and about 40,000 people yesterday commemorated the deaths of nearly 8,000 Srebrenica Muslims killed by Serb soldiers in 1995. Following a religious service in Srebrenica’s memorial center, the caskets of the 610 identified victims were passed from hand to hand toward grave pits and buried. The massacre happened shortly before the end of the Bosnian war. The Serb soldiers entered a UN-designated camp and began a slaughter which left 8,000 Muslims dead. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan’s Special Envoy Mark Brown said at the ceremony that the tragedy would haunt the UN forever. "We made serious errors of judgement in a philosophy of impartiality and non-violence which, however admirable, was unsuited to the conflict in Bosnia,” he said. “That is also why I also wrote, the tragedy of Srebrenica will haunt our, the UN history forever." Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul earlier this week issued a statement decrying the fact the massacre’s perpetrators have yet to be captured even 10 years later. /Aksam/ [03] PARLIAMENT TO HOLD EXTRAORDINARY SESSION FOR RTUK ELECTIONParliament will convene for an extraordinary session tomorrow to elect members of the Supreme Board of Radio and Television (RTUK). BY SAMI KOHEN (MILLIYET)Columnist Sami Kohen comments on global terrorism. A summary of his column is as follows: ”Will Italy be the terrorists’ next target after Spain and Britain? Europeans are currently fearful that they are on the brink of a new Middle Ages. British Prime Minister Tony Blair condemned last week’s London attacks, calling them ‘barbaric.’ Every person with a conscience denounced these terrorist attacks, which claimed more than 50 innocent lives. However, some also stressed that there were tasks beyond mourning. ‘It is easy for Tony Blair to call yesterdays bombings “barbaric” – of course they were – but what were the civilian deaths of the Anglo-American invasion of Iraq in 2003, the children torn apart by cluster bombs, the countless innocent Iraqis gunned down at American military checkpoints?’ wrote Robert Fisk of Britain's The Independent. ‘When they die, it is “collateral damage”; when “we” die, it is “barbaric terrorism”.’For years Fisk was a Middle East correspondent. He is an experienced journalist and activist. He was one of the few reporters who interviewed Osama bin Laden in the 1990s. Fisk knows who really created Osama. Although the US supported Osama’s militants fighting the USSR in Afghanistan for a long time, the stationing of US forces in Saudi Arabia caused Osama’s militants to change sides. Osama then declared a war against foreigners to get them out of the Holy Lands. Fisk tried to warn of the possible effects of the Gulf War on the region’s future, but nobody listened to him until after September 11. ‘If we are fighting insurgency in Iraq, what makes us believe insurgency won't come to us?’ he also asked. If the US hadn’t tried to establish world domination by invading Afghanistan and Iraq following September 11, there would have never been such chaos in the world, where poverty and inequality are such huge problems. Unfortunately President Bush collaborated with Britain in this madness and threw the British people into the fire together with his own nation. Fisk’s warning reminded me of Saddam Hussein’s words: ‘We could also hurt you. Maybe we can’t invade the US, but Arabs can reach you individually.’ Humanity has created its own barbarism with its own hands.” ARCHIVE <script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript" src="http:/_www.byegm.gov.tr_statistic/countcode.js"> </script> Turkish Press Review Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
