[01] SEZER TO MEET ECEVIT
The tension between the government and the President emanating
from the decree in the force of law (KHK) regarding the dismissal
of certain civil servants has eased. President Sezer who returned
to Ankara the day before yesterday after a visit to Istanbul gave
an appointment to Prime Minister Ecevit for a meeting. Sezer and
Ecevit are expected to meet today. Replying to questions posed by
journalists on his way to Hacibektas, Prime Minister Ecevit said
that during the meeting with Sezer they will take up the KHK
issue, and he said that believed the issue would be solved.
Ecevit also said, "Three different parties have been working in
harmony more than one year with the appreciation of the people. I
believe that similar harmony can be achieved between the

[02] ECEVIT IN HACIBEKTAS
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit went to Hacibektas yesterday to
attend the 37th traditional Hacibektas commemoration activities
which are going to start today. Ecevit visited the Haci Bektas
Veli Museum in Hacibektas and inaugurated a kindergarten which
was built by a citizen. He also inspected the Cultural Centre,
the construction of which is still underway. Ecevit said,
"Hacibektas is a very important cultural centre not only for the
Dervishes of the Bektashi sect and other Muslims, but also for

[03] TURKEY SIGNS "TWIN ACCORDS"
Yesterday Turkey signed the United Nations (UN) Personal and
Political Rights Accord and the UN Economic, Social and Cultural
Rights Accord, which are called the "twin accords". Turkey's
Permanent Representative at the UN, Ambassador Volkan Vural
signed these accords in New York on behalf of Turkey. All the
European Union (EU) member countries are party to these accords
which have been signed previously by all candidate countries
except Turkey. By signing these accords, Turkey will recognize
the political and cultural rights of minorities and the right of

[04] DENKTAS CALLS ON KLERIDES
The 26th anniversary of the liberation of Gazimagosa has been
celebrated in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). In
a speech he delivered at the ceremony President Rauf Denktas
called on the Greek Cypriot leader Glafkos Klerides to make peace
together. Denktas said, "We are sovereign and equal as you are.
Tell the truth to your youth". In his speech, Denktas also
emphasized the importance of the Cyprus Peace Operation.

[05] WALKER: TURKEY HAS BEEN HISTORICALLY HELPFUL IN THE PEACE PROCESS
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Foreign Minister
Ismail Cem, the US Assistant Secretary of State Edward Walker
said Turkey has ideas which will contribute to the Middle East
peace process and added that she has been historically helpful in
the issue. Walker said, "We want to work together with Turkish
authorities to conclude the Middle Eastern peace process".
Referring to a new summit between Israeli and Palestinian
officials, Walker says he is optimistic that a
Palestinian-Israeli peace settlement can be reached in the near

[06] TURKEY TO AID LIBYA IN MINE CLEARING
Libya has asked Turkey to assist in locating and removing mine
fields. The request for assistance in locating and clearing mine
fields remaining from World War II was made by Deputy Speaker of
Parliament Ahmet Ibrahim to a Turkish delegation from the
Turkey-Libya friendship group, which is currently in Libya
visiting work sites run by Turkish construction companies.

[07] BELGIUM RULES TO SEND FEHRIYE ERDAL TO THIRD COUNTRY
According to the Belgian radio station, VRT, Belgian Minister of
the Interior Antoine Duquesne has ruled that Fehriye Erdal, who
is wanted by Turkey on murder charges, be sent to a third country
for judgement. It is reported that she may be sent to an African

[08] DALLARA: "TURKEY IS ON THE RIGHT PATH"
The head of the Institute of International Finance (IIF), Charles
H. Dallara met with Central Bank Governor Gazi Ercel yesterday
and then held a press conference with the Central Bank's Foreign
Affairs Director Omer Altay. At the press conference, Dallara
evaluated the government's new economic program by saying "
Turkey's economic program is both ingenuous and strong". Stating
that he supported the Turkish government's disinflation program,
Dallara said, " If the Central Bank, the Turkish people, the
business world and the Turkish government cooperate, Turkey will
have a single digit inflation rate. Then foreign investors will
be interested in Turkey". He said,"Turkey is an important country
for the world economy" and added, "Turkey is a part of the
Western world. We closely follow the Turkish government's
stability program. If the economic program is implemented fully,
the doors of the European Union will open for Turkey". He said
his team did not see a problem in the balance of payments and
stated "The International Monetary Fund's (IMF) agreeing to this
type of program shows that it trusts Turkey". Dallara pointed out
that there was no need to revise the exchange rates and said, "It
is important to support the exchange rate policy with a fiscal
income policy". He said, "Turkey is full of confidence and
awareness and is doing a serious job for the first time in 20

[09] GEN. KARADAYI HAS HEART ATTACK
The Former Chief of the General Staff, retired General Ismail
Hakki Karadayi had a hearth attack yesterday in Bodrum. It is
reported that Karadayi is being treated in intensive care unit in
a private hospital in Bodrum and that his condition is good in

[10] YILMAZ'S STATEMENT ON THE ANCIENT CITY OF THE ZEUGMA
State Minister Mustafa Yilmaz has said that the work to rescue
the ancient city of Zeugma, which will be inundated by the waters
of Birecik Dam are still continuing. Yilmaz said, "The private
sector, public sector and non-governmental organizations are
doing a very good work. When the work is completed, Zeugma will
be the most magnificent open air-museum." /Cumhuriyet/
[11] FOREIGN PRESS PRAISES TURKISH TOURISM
Turkey's cultural and historical heritage has attracted the
attention of the foreign press. According to a Tourism Ministry
statement, the Spanish Tiempo magazine has praised Turkish
tourism. In the magazinespace was devoted to introducing the
Izmir and Aegean shores and Izmir was qualified as the "heart of
the Aegean". Turkey's rich cultural and historical heritage was
also emphasized by Tiempo. In addition, the thermal facilities in
Turkey were descibed as unique and incomparable in the world.
Meanwhile, the Spanish daily, El Pais-El Viajero gave wide
coverage to Istanbul's historical and cultural richness.

[12] QUAKE VICTIMS IN GREECE
The Sapes and Komotini Municipalities in Greece invited 60 quake
victims, from Golcuk whose age range between 13 and 18 to their
countries to take part in a youth camp. Meanwhile, 40 university
students from Greece and Turkey will meet in Istanbul to attend
the "Turkish and Greek University Students's Meeting for Peace"
to be held between August 18 and 25. In the youth camp, jointly
organized by the Foundation for the Human Sources Development
(IKGV) and by the Sapes and Komotini Municipalities, there will
be concerts and sport activities and entertainment scheduled to

[13] SABIHA GOKCEN AIRPORT
The International Sabiha Gokcen Airport has been praised by
foreign airport representatives and tour operators, who organize
charter flights from Germany to Turkey. These officials who
visited Turkey were briefed about Sabiha Gokcen Airport and made
observations at the new airport, whose construction is still
underway. The Officials stated that they would choose Sabiha
Gokcen Airport as "a new flight point". /Cumhuriyet/
[14] FIRST MODEL VILLAGE IN VAN
Turkey's first model village has been completed in the
southeastern Catak district in Van. The village has a police
station, post office, a school with 16-classrooms health center
and employment center. Location of the Konalga village also have
tarmac roads. The families who were evacuated from their villages
because of the struggleight against terrorism will be settled in

[15] KEMALREIS FRIGATE TO SAIL TO BRITAIN
The TCG Kemalreis Frigate, one of the modern frigates in the
Turkish Naval Forces, will sail to Plymouth to take part in
training exercises between Aug. 29 and Oct. 14. /Turkiye/
[16] RAY CHARLES IN ISTANBUL
The famous jazz musician Ray Charles who arrived in Istanbul
yesterday was welcomed by the Protocol Director of Rumeli Holding
Company Abdullah Nebioglu at Ataturk Airport. Charles gave a
concert last night as part of the "Rumeli Concerts".He will give
