    [03] SEZER NOT TO VISIT IRAN

    President Ahmet Necdet Sezer stated that he would not go to Iran to attend the Economic Cooperation Organization's (ECO) meeting in Tehran. Turkey will be represented by State Minister Mehmet Kececiler at the meeting. State Minister Kececiler held a press conference yesterday on the issue yesterday, during which he said, "A decision was reached concerning the agenda of the ECO meeting before. Sezer was elected the President a short while ago and his agenda is very intensive. Therefore he will not be able to attend this meeting. Sezer considered the official invitation of Iran as 'kind'. However, the information that he will not attend this meeting was delivered to the Iranian diplomatic sources." /Aksam/

    [04] TURKEY WARNS EU OVER ESDI

    Turkey has sent a diplomatic note of warning to 11 European Union countries which are also members of NATO over their approach on the European Security and Defence Identity (ESDI). According to foreign diplomatic sources in Brussels, Turkey sent this note to remind its recipients of decisions taken at the NATO summit last April in Washington regarding the ESDI decision-making mechanism. The note, whose existence has been confirmed by Turkish diplomatic sources at NATO headquarters in Brussels, was sent to France, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Greece. In the note that was sent on May 31, Ankara draws attention to the conclusions of the NATO Council meeting that was held in Florence on May 24-25 stressing that the council was confirming the results of the Washington Summit. The note underlines that the decision taken by the EU over the participation of non-EU members in the ESDI contradicts the results of the Washington NATO summit. /Turkish Daily News/

    [05] ECEVIT'S STATEMENT CONCERNING THE DISAGREEMENT BETWEEN MHP AND ANAP

    Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit wanted the tension between the coalition partners, Motherland Party (ANAP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) to be removed. Ecevit evaluated the tension between ANAP and MHP and his visit to Norway during the group meeting of the Democratic Left Party (DSP) yesterday. Ecevit said, "In an atmosphere in which the inflation began to decrease to a great extent, if a governmental or political agitation occurs, in other words, if this tremor continues, then it will damage the positive developments that occurred both in Turkey and abroad. None of the parties or the leaders can carry the responsibility if this agitation causes a depression. I believe that all the parties and politicians should keep away from a style that will increase this kind of tension and agitation." /Aksam/

    [06] CEM BEGINS BALTIC VISIT

    Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ismail Cem, said in Latvia on Wednesday that Turkey would continue its support for the Baltic countries in their bids for NATO membership. On the first day of his visit to a series of Baltic cities, Cem was received by Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga and Prime Minister Andris Berzius and also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Indulis Berzins. Following the meeting, the two ministers held a joint press conference where Berzins thanked Turkey for its support for Latvia's NATO membership bid. Cem said Turkey was determined to improve both economic and political relations with Latvia and reportedly proposed a cooperation with Latvia in the textile and construction sectors. The two countries are expected to sign a free trade agreement in July. Cem will travel to Latvia today. /Turkish Daily News/

    [07] TANTAN IN BAKU

    Minister of the Interior, Sadettin Tantan, will have contacts in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku today. Within the framework of his two-day official visit, Tantan will be received by the Azerbaijani President Haydar Aliyev and meet the Azerbaijani Minister of the Interior, Ramil Usubov, and other officials. /Cumhuriyet/

    [08] PEARSON PRAISES TURKEY

    Robert Pearson, who was appointed as the new US Ambassador to Ankara but waiting for the approval of the Congress, answered the questions concerning Turkey during the Senate's Foreign Relations Committee session, chaired by the Republican Party's Senator to Oregon, Gordon Smith. Pearson said, "Turkey is a key country in terms of the security of both NATO and Europe. Within this framework, it is natural for Turkey to continue its contribution to the developments concerning the security of Europe and NATO. /Turkiye/

    [09] US EXIMBANK READY TO SUPPORT BAKU-CEYHAN

    The advisor to the president and secretary of state for Caspian basin energy diplomacy, John Wolf, said on Tuesday that the US Eximbank was ready to grant financial support for the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline project. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the International Caspian Oil and Gas Fair-2000 in Baku, Wolf stressed that the US government gave its full backing to the Azerbaijan government's oil policies. Emphasizing the importance of the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline project, Wolf said that the project would contribute to both the safe transportation of oil to world markets and to protecting the Turkish straits from possible environmental disaster. /Turkish Daily News/

    [10] GENERAL SECRETARIAT OF EU

    The draft law to establish the General Secretariat of the European Union (EU) affiliated to the Prime Ministry in order to ensure harmony and coordination within the framework of Turkey's efforts to become a EU member, was accepted by the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA). The General Secretariat of EU will be responsible to ensure coordination and harmonization for public institutions and establishments in their contacts abroad. /Cumhuriyet/

    [11] NORWAY TO SELL PENGUIN MISSILES TO TURKEY

    Democratic Left Party (DSP) leader and Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, who had been on an official visit to Norway, said that the Norwegians have agreed to sell Turkey Penguin anti-ship missiles (high subsonic, surface skimming, air or sea launched and with a range of approximately 15 nautical miles), which the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) feel a great need to have in their inventory. Speaking at a DSP parliamentary group meeting, Ecevit said, "In spite of the fact that some of our allies are refusing to sell Turkey the weapons its needs and are in fact imposing a merciless embargo upon us, Norway is proving to be the exception rather than the rule." /Turkish Daily News/

    [12] COMPULSORY EARTHQUAKE INSURANCE

    Director of Bogazici Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, Prof. Ahmet Mete Isikara, stated that the compulsory earthquake insurance will begin to be implemented on 27 September. Isikara further said, "The insurance companies will only operate as the mediators and the state will be responsible for paying the damage. The earthquake that occurred in Cerkes was intervened in immediately. It is a possibility of 63% that an earthquake registering 6.3 on the Richter scale will occur in the following 16 months in Turkey. The important thing is to be prepared for it." /Cumhuriyet/

    [13] INTERNATIONAL EARTHQUAKE COUNCIL TO BE ESTABLISHED

    The international earthquake council will be established in order to announce the results, which are obtained during the scientific researches concerning the earthquake, to the public. The council will begin to operate in this month. Deputy Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), Prof. Tugrul Tankut, stated that the preparations to establish this Council reached its final stage. /Cumhuriyet/

    [14] FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND FORD OTOSAN'S SUPPORT FOR EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS

    The foundation of 116 permanent houses in Golcuk, which will be built by Ford Motor Company and Ford Otosan for the earthquake victims, was laid. General Director of Ford Otosan, Mark Schulz, stated that the project of constructing permanent houses was a sign of the responsibility shown to the region. /Star/

    [15] TURKEY'S SUCCESS IN GEOTHERMALOGY

    The International Geothermal Assembly (IGA), which is held in every five years, was organized in the city of Beppu in Japan this year. During this congress, which was attended by nearly 1,000 participants, 900 scientific announcement were presented. For the first time in this congress, that was attended by 67 countries, the Turkish session was held this year. Chairman of the European Geothermal Organization, Orhan Mertoglu, not only acted as the session's chairman, but also explained the developments in the Turkish geothermal energy. Mertoglu stated that Turkey became the best fourth country in terms of the geothermal energy after China, Iceland and the US. /Milliyet/

    [16] MEHMET NURI YILMAZ TO VISIT VATICAN

    A new step will be taken concerning the dialouge between the religions. For the first time in the course of history, a Turkish Chairman of the Religious Affairs will be welcomed by the leader of the Christian community in Vatican between 14 and 16 June. Chairman of the Religious Affairs, Mehmet Nuri Yilmaz and an accompanying delegation of eight, will go to Rome for a two-day visit. Yilmaz will also meet Pope face to face and during the meeting Yilmaz will request a cooperation for fighting terrorism and xenophobia. /Hurriyet/

    [17] HUWART'S POSITIVE OPINION ABOUT TURKEY

    French State Minister, responsible for economy, Francois Huwart, left Turkey with positive impressions. Huwart, who delivered a speech during the official opening cocktail of the 'France 2000 Fair' at the French Palace in Istanbul, stated that Europe's opinion about Turkey should change from now on. Huwart added, "15 European countries, which recognized Turkey's candidacy to the European Union (EU) now entered a new stage in regard with their relations with Turkey. In addition, instead of refusing the identities, we should develop the dialogue between the cultures and the nations." Huwart also called the educators, businessmen and the other parts of the society to improve the relations between Turkey and Europe and to contribute to the friendship between Turkey and France. /Turkiye/

    [18] ITALIANS HOPEFUL TO INVEST IN TURKEY

    Italian Chamber of Commerce's Chairman of the European Region and the Chamber of the Italian Commercial Chamber, Fabio Morvilli, stated that the European countries' point of view on Turkey would change in the following years. Morvilli delivered a speech during the opening of the 'Italian Chambers of Commerce's Meeting of European Region' at Hilton Hotel in Izmir and said, "Italian Chambers of Commerce has more than 20 offices in Europe, including Hungary, Switzerland and Turkey. It is very important that this meeting is held in Turkey and the Italian Foreign Trade Undersecretary, Mavro Fabris, will arrive in Izmir today. We want to increase the commerce and cooperation between Turkey and Italy. I believe that Turkey will become a member of the European Union in a short period of time." /Turkiye/

    [19] TREASURY RECEIVES 268.5 TRILLION TL FROM TELSIM AND TURKCELL

    Turkey's first cellular phone companies, Turkcell and Telsim, paid the income share amounting to 268.5 trillion TL to the Treasury as from May 1998. According to the documents received by the Investigation Commission of the Turkish Grand National Assembly and by the Treasury Undersecretariat, it was learned that 196.8 trillion TL was collected from Turkcell and 71.5 trillion TL was collected by Telsim during the last two years. /Sabah/

    [20] TECHNOLOGY INDEX ESTABLISHED BY IMKB

    Istanbul Stock Exchange (IMKB) established the technology index. As part of the decision taken by the Executive Board of the IMKB, Data Processing and the Defence Indexes will take place below the National-Technological index. The companies, which prepare and produce the internet hardware and services, computers, electronic office equipment and the communication equipment, will be included in the above-mentioned sector indexes. /Aksam/

    [21] YAPI KREDI SELLS ITS SHARES

    Yapi Kredi Bank sold its shares in Superonline and Mobicom to Lebham Brothers International for 72 million dollars. In a statement issued by Yapi Kredi Bank, it was stated that the profit earned by this sale, which is 375 billion TL, will be added to the capital of the bank. The above-mentioned shares were sold within the framework of the permission that was received by the Treasury Undersecretariat's Directorate General of Foreign Capital. /Aksam/

    [22] GOLDAS RECEIVES AWARD IN JEWELLERY FAIR

    Goldas Jewelery attracted great attention during the jewellery fair that was organized in Las Vegas, the US. Goldas Jewellery was awarded by the fair administration and its stand was elected as one of the best stands in the fair among 2,300 other companies that attended that world's one of the most famous and prestigious fair called "JCK Vegas 2000 Jewellery Show'. General Director of Goldas Jewellery, Sedat Yalinkaya, stated that their aim was to establish relationship with the other companies in the fair, which they succeeded in. /Milliyet/

    [23] IS BANK RECEIVES LOAN FROM ABROAD

    Is Bank received a loan amounting to 150 million dollars. This export, which was given 'BBB' by one of the leading rating establishments, Fitch IBCA, was led by Salomon Smith Barney and Salomon Brothers. /Milliyet/

    [24] JANNISARY BAND IN AMSTERDAM

    Ankara Metropolitan Municipality's Jannisary Band concert at the famous Dam Square in Amsterdam, attracted the Dutch people and Turks living in Amsterdam. The band was invited to Holland by Turkevi. Everyone who enjoyed this concert accompanied this Military Band with their songs. /Turkiye/

    [25] HUGE WATER PARK TO BE OPENED IN AEGEAN

    A water park in Turkey, which is not less fantastic than the examples in the US, will be opened on 17 June in Izmir's district of Selcuk. This water park's environmental style was designed by the American NBGS Company and was constructed with the material produced again by this company. The construction of this park, 'Aqua Fantasy', amounted to 17 million dollars. /Turkiye/

    [26] EXCAVATION TO SAVE BELKIS ANCIENT CITY TO CONTINUE

    The efforts to save Belkis ancient city will continue after the first stage of these excavations come to an end on 18 June. The French team, which carry out these excavations, stated that they would continue these excavations under water with ten professional divers. Meanwhile, the region's photographs will be taken from all perspectives and a museum, which will reflect a copy of Belkis, will be built in Gaziantep. /Sabah/

    [27] ANATOLIAN RALLY IN IZMIR

    Turkey hosted a rally for the first time, whose candidacy was aproved by the World Rally Championship FFIA. Citroen's team attended this rally, which was organized between 26 and 28 May in Izmir and Manisa with specially-produced ten cars. /Sabah/
