[01] SUPREME MILITARY COUNCIL MEETINGThe Supreme Military Council (YAS), which determines promotions and retirements of Turkish Armed Forces personnel, convened yesterday for a four-day meeting headed by Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz. The council members visited Ataturk's Mausoleum in the morning. The YAS meeting will end on Thursday.The current chief of General Staff, Gen.Ismail Hakki Karadayi, will be retiring this year and is to be replaced by Land Forces Commander Gen.Huseyin Kivrikoglu. The vacant position left by Kivrikoglu will be filled by 1st Army Commander Gen.Atilla Ates. Deputy Chief of General Staff Gen.Cevik Bir will be appointed to the 1st Army. The current Gendarmerie Forces Commander, Gen.Fikret Ozden Boztepe, will be retiring this year along with Gen.Karadayi. A number of high-ranking officers are expected to be promoted. /All papers/ [02] PRESIDENT APPROVES AWARD FOR KARADAYIPresident Suleyman Demirel has approved a decision taken by the Council of Ministers to award Chief of General Staff General Ismail Hakki Karadayi with a state "Order of Merit" award. In a statement by the Presidential Press Office, it was stated yesterday that the President would approve the presenting of the "Order of Merit" medal to Chief of General Staff General Ismail Hakki Karadayi in recognition of his devoted, loyal services to the Turkish Republic, the territorial integrity of the country, and the preservation of peace and unity in Turkish society with success. /Sabah/[03] CREDENTIALS TO DEMIRELBosnia-Herzegovina's new ambassador to Turkey, Besim Spahic, presented his credentials to President Suleyman Demirel yesterday. Ambassador Spahic replaces Ambassador Hajruddin Somun, who was the first Bosnian envoy to Turkey. President Demirel also accepted the credentials of Moldovian Ambassador Fiodor Angheli yesterday. Ambassador Angheli, who is of Gagauz origin, delivered a speech in Turkish.The European Union (EU) Commission's new representative in Ankara, Ambassador Karen Fogg of Britain, presented her credentials to Demirel yesterday. Ambassador Fogg replaces Ambassador Michael Lake, also of Britain, as the highest EU envoy in Turkey. After presenting her credentials, Ambassador Fogg had talks with Demirel, the Anatolia news agency reported. [04] INTERIOR, JUSTICE, TRANSPORTATION MINISTERS TO RESIGNFollowing the July 31 agreement on an election date, the interior, justice and transportation ministers have until 5:00 p.m. today to resign from their posts, as stipulated by Article 14 of the Constitution. The Executive Board of the Motherland Party (ANAP) assembled yesterday and reportedly discussed the resignation of the ministers who have adopted Tuesday, August 4, as their resignation date. /All papers/[05] TURKEY-TRNC COOPERATIONA protocol between Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) for cooperation on reforestation was signed yesterday by Turkish Forestry Minister Ersin Taranoglu and his counterpart in the TRNC, Kenan Akin. Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Democratic Left Party (DSP) Bulent Ecevit attended the protocol signing, the Anatolia news agency reported.Ecevit, in a speech at the Prime Ministry, said that a forest fire in Yesilirmak in the TRNC, which broke out last month causing the loss of many hectares of forested land, was a sad event, adding that fire-fighting was made easier by the help that was sent from Turkey. [06] MASHEDOV MEETS WITH CINDORUKChechen Head of State Aslan Mashedov, who is currently in Istanbul, met with Chairman of the Democrat Turkey Party (DTP) Husamettin Cindoruk yesterday. Mashedov noted that the Chechen people had received great support in their just cause. Cindoruk said for his part that the Chechen people had many diplomatic achievements and had the right to be happy. /Hurriyet/[07] AUSTRIAN-TURKISH ASSOCIATIONS' UNION VISITS TURKEYMembers of the Executive Board of the Austrian-Turkish Associations' Union will visit Turkish President Suleyman Demirel today. They will present a goodwill letter from Austrian President Thomas Klestil to Demirel, in which Klestil invites Demirel to Austria in November. /Hurriyet/[08] SIEMENS' LEASING COMPLETES FIRST YEAR IN TURKEYThe latest link in the chain of Siemens' leasing companies which have been established in 15 countries, Siemens Leasing-Turkey aims to become one of Europe's top 10 leasing firms within the next five years. One of the top ranking institutions in the leasing sector, Siemens Leasing is now one year old, an anniversary marked by a press conference in Istanbul yesterday.At the conference, Siemens Leasing-Turkey Board Chairman and SIMKO Trade and Industry Corp.Deputy General Manager Christoph Urban gave general information about Siemens' projects planned for Turkey and made an evaluation of the first year of Siemens Leasing-Turkey operations. /All papers/ [09] TURKEY TO BE CAR PRODUCTION CENTERThe Ford car production center for which the foundations were laid on 26 July in Golcuk, Izmit has attracted the attention of Western countries. The weekly British newspaper The European quoted that with its geographic location and natural resources, a powerful automobile industry could be constructed in Turkey like that in Detroit, the US. The newspaper reported that the Turkish government had donated the land to the Koc-Ford joint venture to construct the factory in return for building a university, adding that this was a sign of the importance that Turkey attached to foreign investment. /Milliyet/[10] CANEVI IN IIF ADMINISTRATIONChairman of the Turkish Economy Bank (TEB), Yavuz Canevi, has been elected to the Executive Board of the International Institute of Finance (IIF), established by leading world finance institutions in 1980. /Milliyet/[11] 'EVIL FRONT' AGAINST TURKEYArmenian institutions in America have started efforts to prevent the establishment Turkish departments in American universities. With this aim in mind they have formed an 'evil front' against Turkey with Greek, Greek Cypriot and Kurdish societies in America. US Armenian National Committee chairman Vicken Sonentaz-Papazyan claims that the Turkish government is one of duplicity and deceit. /Milliyet/[12] SUCCESS OF TURKISH STUDENT IN USIbrahim Deletioglu, studying law in Illinois University, has been included to the "Who is Who in American Universities" catalogue of university successes. The university has also presented an award to Deletioglu in recognition of his success. /Cumhuriyet-Milliyet/[13] TURCO-GREEK COOPERATIONA meeting between delegations from Turkey and Greece was held in Gumulcine (Komotini) yesterday. Edirne Governor Mehmet Canseven said in a statement that they went to Greece at the invitation of Rodop Governor Stergios Stavropoulos, who visited Edirne last year. The meeting was held in a friendly atmosphere, the Anatolia news agency reported yesterday.[14] IGHT PKK TERRORISTS CAPTUREDIn Pazarcik, Kahramanmaras, eight PKK terrorists have been captured. Security operations are still going on. /Sabah/[15] NARCOTICS WORTH TRILLIONS OF TL SEIZEDTurkish narcotics agents yesterday found and seized 300 kgs of morphine base worth a trillion Turkish liras in the fuel tank of a truck coming from Iran. Three people were taken into custody in connection with the incident. Their names have not been disclosed.
