[01] YILMAZ TO VISIT TRNC
Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz will visit the Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on July 20. Yilmaz, who will share in the
July 20 Peace Operation celebrations in the TRNC, will meet with
TRNC President Rauf Denktas and Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu.
Meanwhile, a project for the transfer of water from Turkey to the
TRNC with huge semi-submersible balloons, will officially start
during a ceremony to be attended by Turkish President Suleyman
Demirel on July 25. General Director of the State Water Works
(DSI) Dogan Altinbilek said that a pipeline project for an annual
transfer of 75 million cubic meters of water has also been
started to solve the water shortage in the TRNC. /Sabah/
[02] SPANISH PRIME MINISTER TO VISIT TURKEY
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Anzar will visit Turkey between
21-23 July. It is expected that high level Spanish officials,
businessmen and journalists will accompany Anzar during the
visit. According to the Foreign Ministry, at the meetings between
Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz and his Spanish counterpart Anzar,
bilateral relations, international issues and recent developments

[03] OPERATION IN SIVAS: THREE PKK TERRORISTS KILLED
As a result of operations carried out by Turkish security forces
in the Cayozu village of the Divrigi district following a
massacre of four people by members of the PKK terrorist
organization, three PKK terrorists have been killed and six
terrorists have been taken into custody. Meanwhile, a member of
the illegal TKPML/TIKKO organization has been detained in the
Yaglialan village of the Turhal district in Tokat. /Sabah_
[04] GENDARMERY OPERATIONS IN ISTANBUL
The Istanbul Gendarmery has been conducting "peace operations" in
and around Istanbul. By the end of the operations 29 wanted had
been arrested and six unlicenced weapons had been confiscated.

[05] 'TURKEY WILL ABSOLUTELY JOIN EU'
A delegation from the German Industrialists' Confederation (BDI),
invited to Turkey by the Turkish Industrialists' and
Businessmen's Association (TUSIAD), has met with Turkish
President Suleyman Demirel and Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz. Head
of the BDI Executive Board Hans Olaf Henkel yesterday said: "We
want to contribute to the development of Turco-German relations".
He stated that prior to his arrival in Turkey, he had met with
German Prime Minister Helmuth Kohl and Foreign Minister Klaus
Kinkel, who both offered support for his visit. Noting that the
first stage of joining the European Union (EU) was the solution
of economic problems, Henkel pointed out that problems such as
terrorism and fundamentalism should be similarly solved. /Sabah/
[06] US ORDER OF MERIT FOR KARADAYI
Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen.Ismail Hakki Karadayi, who is
currently in Washington, has toured NATO Headquarters in Norfolk
and Langley Air Base. Karadayi watched a special show of F-15
aircraft, high-tech fighter planes which are produced in the US.
An official ceremony was later held in the Pentagon for Karadayi,
who then returned from Norfolk to Washington. Prior to the
ceremony, US Chief of General Staff Gen.Henry Shelton welcomed
Karadayi with a 19 gun salute and decorated him with an Order of
Merit. US Secretary of Defense William Cohen noted during the
ceremony that Karadayi had contributed to the development of
stability in the region around Turkey.
Following the ceremony, Karadayi and Shelton held a meeting.
Director of the Office of the US General Staff, Admiral Dennis
Blair gave a briefing on the "global view" to Karadayi, who later
met with Secretary of Defense Cohen. Karadayi also talked with
Sandy Berger, President Clinton's National Security Advisor at
the White House, and discussed a US proposal regarding a no-fly
zone over Cyprus. /Sabah/
[07] MOODY'S REPRESENTATIVE SUPPORTS GOVERNMENT PROGRAMME
David Levy, Head of the Department of Country Risks of Moody's
Investors Service, said in a conference on "Rating Concepts and
Applications in Turkey" in Istanbul, that the Turkish
government's programme on struggling against inflation was very
assertive. He added that if the programme was be fully applied,
it would be a great success. Levy noted that the programme would
increase Turkey's credit grade. He finally suggested that the
programme should be followed without any concessions, so as to
bring inflation in Turkey down to the expected level in the
shortest possible time. /Cumhuriyet/
[08] ISRAEL UNWILLING TO GET INVOLVED IN CYPRUS ISSUE
The Israeli ambassador to Turkey, Uri Bar-Nar, said that the
Jewish state does not want to interfere in Ankara'a affairs with
its neighbouring Arab countries, just as Turkey does not want to
draw Israel into the Cyprus issue, which involves Greek Cypriot
attempts to deploy Russian-made S-300 missiles on the island.
He also reiterated Israel's denial of recent reports that Turkish
jetpilots were being trained in Israel to counter the S-300
missiles and that Turkey was building a base in its territories
exclusively for Israel's use. /Cumhuriyet/
[09] RUSSIA TO DELIVER MISSILES BY SEA
The Russian Ruskii Telegraf daily newspaper has reported that
delivery preparations were near completion and that warships from
Russia's Atlantic fleet were expected to carry the missiles. The
newspaper also reported preparations were continuing at the sea
base in the northern city of Severomorsk and that activities of
NATO spy planes over the region have recently accelerated. It
noted too, that high security measures are being put into effect
for the miisile delivery. /Milliyet/
[10] FORMER GENDARMERY COMMANDER PASSES AWAY
Retired General, Sedat Celasun, a former Gendarmery Forces
Commander died of a heart attack on Thursday in Canakkale. His
funeral will be held in Ankara, where he will be buried. /All

[11] WORLD BANK SUPPORTS NATURAL SITES IN TURKEY
With the support of the World Bank, a project entitled GES-2
(Global Environmental Opportunities) is being prepared for the
preservation of four natural sites in Turkey, the Anatolia news
agency reported on Thursday. According to information received
from Forestry Ministry and National Parks administration Timur
Erdem, the World Bank is preparing the GES-2 project in order to
protect the Sultansazligi Bird Haven, Artvin Camili Gogit Efendi
Efeler Forest, Antalya Koprulu Canyon and Kirklareli Igneliada
Sakagolu a region of outstanding natural beauty. The project will
be put into effect after five years and all vehicles and
equipment needed for the project will be provided by the World
Bank.
[12] DUMA CHAIRMAN TO VISIT TURKEY
Gennadi Seleznyov, Chairman of the Duma, the sub-flank of the
Parliament of the Russian Federation, will come to Turkey on
Sunday. Seleznyov who will start contacts on July 20, is
scheduled to be received by President Suleyman Demirel and
Parliament Speaker Hikmet Cetin, the Anatolia news agency
reported.
[13] ECEVIT TO PERSUADE EUROPE
Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, speaking at the first
meeting of Higher Council for Citizens Living Abroad, yesterday
accused European countries with conducting a policy of racial and
religious discrimination and said,"We have to enlighten Europe on
the subject. We have to persuade them that this is a disgrace
for humanity." Noting that Turkish workers had once been ,called
"guests" , Ecevit said that they were no longer seen as guests.

[14] ANKARA CAUTIOUS ABOUT AEGEAN
Regarding newspaper reports on Greek intentions to lease some
"rocks" having the status of islets, Foreign Ministry deputy
Spokesman Sermet Atacanlý said yesterday, "Greece may do whatever
it pleases with the islands belonging to it. However we will
oppose any fait accompli concerning rocks of unknown
ownership."/Milliyet/
[15] KLERIDES: "TURKEY WILL NOT ATTACK US"
Greek Cypriot Administration leader Glafkos Klerides said
yesterday that he did not believe Turkey would attack in the
event of the deployment of missiles. The Greek Cypriot leader
reiterated his view that he would cancel the order if he believed
progress had been made in solving the islands' problems. In an
interview with Jane's Defence Weekly, Klerides said that he
could not understand why Turkey sees the deployment of S-300
missiles as a reason for conflict. /Milliyet/
[16] WASHINGTON POST: "TURKEY IS SEEKING REGIONAL STABILITY"
A report by Kelly Couturier in yesterday's Washington Post
newspaper, states that Turkey is concerned over instability in
the Balkans, the Caucasus and the Middle East and is ready to
cooperate in any attempts to bring peace to these

[17] EU ANNULS QUOTAS FOR TURKISH RAW TEXTILE PRODUCTS
The European Union has withdrawn its decision to apply quotas on
raw textiles produced in Turkey. Following efforts by Turkish
officials to persuade the EU Commission that the decision, dated
April 10 1997, is unjust, EU Commission officials reviewed their
decision; but it will continue to apply quotas on raw textile
products from China, Egypt, India, Indonesia and Pakistan.

[18] TANER PRAISES TURKISH ECONOMY
Giving a speech during the opening of an Istanbul meeting on
"Rating and its Application in Turkey", State Minister
responsible for the economy Gunes Taner said yesterday that
international companies were mistaken in their previous
evaluations about the Turkish economy. In the meeting, which
representatives from Moody's, a rating company, also attended,
Taner said that "rating firms had failed when they announced that
some countries described as 'Asian tigers' were more secure for
investment than Turkey." /Hurriyet/
