  • [01] DEMIREL VISITING TUNISIA

    President Suleyman Demirel is flying today for a two-day visit to Tunisia as the official guest of his Tunisian counterpart, Zeynel Abidin Bin Ali. During his visit both leaders will have an opportunity to discuss regional issues, efforts to revive the Middle East peace process, post-Gulf War developments and terrorism issues.

    Demirel will be accompanied by State Minister Isin Celebi, Minister of Communications Necdet Menzir, Culture Minister Istemihan Talay, Tourism Minister Ibrahim Gurdal and a number of businessmen and journalists. /All papers/

    [02] NEW ATLANTIC INITIATIVE CONFERENCE IN ISTANBUL

    Deputy Chief of General Staff Cevik Bir, speaking during the concluding session of a two-day New Atlantic Initiative conference held at the Ciragan Palace in Istanbul, said that the NATO alliance should not be undermined and the that "transatlantic link" should not be weakened for the sake of promoting the "European Security and Defense Identity". He stressed that NATO was still the bench mark of European defense with vital principles of common defense reinforced by transatlantic links.

    Former Turkish President Kenan Evren, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations Ambassador Dore Gold, Crown Prince of Jordan El-Hassan bin Talal and Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of Turkey's National Assembly, Murat Karayalcin also spoke during the panel meeting. /All papers/

    [03] CAR PRODUCTION INCREASES

    It is reported that during the first three months of this year, total car production reached 60,796 units. For the same period last year, the figure was 46,769. /Milliyet/

    [04] HOLBROOKE'S CONTACTS IN CYPRUS

    US Special Cyprus Envoy Richard Holbrooke has completed the shuttle diplomacy which he has been continuing on the island for the last three days. Holbrooke, who will go on to Germany this morning, will not be returning to Cyprus. Following a meeting between President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Rauf Denktas and Holbrooke, it was reported that Holbrooke will not return to Cyprus on Saturday as previously throught. Following the meeting, Denktas said that although Holbrooke would continue with his shuttle diplomacy between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities, Holbrooke would wait for invitations from Greek Cypriot Leader Glafkos Klerides and from himself. Denktas noted that there was also a change in the US State Department's Cyprus Special Coordinator Thomas Miller's programme and added that Miller would also go to Germany with Holbrooke.

    According to diplomatic sources, Denktas stipulated three conditions to Holbrooke: "Equal sovereignty should be accepted. When meetings between the two sides start, the embargo currently being imposed on the TRNC should be lifted. Greek Cypriots should withdraw their EU membership application".

    Meanwhile, Richard Holbrooke has had a "hot" telephone connection set-up between the two sides on the island. The link has a 20 line-capacity. /Milliyet/

    [05] CHAMPION: GALATASARAY

    Galatasaray Football Team, which beat Istanbulspor with a 4-1 win yesterday, became the champion of the Turkish Football League with Fenerbahce following up in second place. Galatasaray's victory was celebrated throughout the country. /Milliyet/

    [06] TURKEY "BEST FOR INVESTMENT"

    An advertisement issued by Prudential Investment, a giant American stock exchange company, announced over the weekend that Turkey is the most lucrative country for investments. The full page advertisement in the New York Times newspaper noted that Turkey ranked first with a 118 % profit distribution, Russia ranked second and Mexico came third. /Hurriyet/

    [07] TRIPARTITE ALLIANCE IN THE MIDDLE EAST

    Jordan has been brought into the strategic alliance between Turkey and Israel in the Middle East. Turkey and Jordan carried out the first joint military training exercise last month within the framework of a military exchange programme. Thus, Jordan's active participation in the strategic cooperation programme between Turkey and Israel has been the stamps of approval.

    Tripartate military cooperation between Turkey, Israel and Jordan increases Turkey's potential to be more active in the Middle East. /Cumhuriyet/

    [08] BAKU-CEYHAN OIL PIPELINE

    Turkey is accelerating its efforts to complete the Baku-Ceyhan crude oil pipeline project. Energy and Natural Resources Minister Cumhur Ersumer said yesterday that Azeri and Turkish degelations would meet on 5-6 May in Istanbul to discuss feasibility report. Following the meeting a working programme would be worked out to bring the project into reality, added Ersumer. /Cumhuriyet/

    [09] PETROLEUM PRODUCTS TAX HIKE

    The fuel consumption tax rate has been increased by 20 points for unleaded, super and normal gasoline, 15 points for kerosine and 10 points for diesel fuel. The new tax rates were put into effect starting May 1.

    Finance Minister Zekeriya Temizel said that the customs tax had been abolished and that the eliminated tax had been added to the fuel consumption tax. The reason for the decision was to put an end to unfair competition, because while fuel coming from European Union (EU) countries had been tax-free, fuel coming from other countries had been taxed, added Temizel. /Hurriyet/Cumhuriyet_

    [10] KARADAYI IN BELGIUM

    Chief of General Staff Ismail Hakki Karadayi went to Brussels yesterday. According to the office of the Chief of General Staff Karadayi will attend the "129th MC/CS Meeting and Shapex 98' Conference". /Cumhuriyet_

    [11] OPERATIONS IN THE SOUTHEAST

    During the one-week operations in the southeast regions of Turkey, 91 PKK terrorists have been either killed or taken captive, according to the Office of the Regional Emergency Rule Governor. During the "Murat" operation, 18 PKK terrorists have been killed in Bingol, Mus, Bitlis, Diyarbakir and Sirnak. /Cumhuriyet/

    [12] TURCO-JAPANESE CULTURAL CENTRE

    A Turkish-Japanese Cultural Centre was opened over the weekend with a ceremony attended by President Suleyman Demirel and Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz. In his opening speech Demirel said that since the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey had taken Japan as a model. Japanese Prince Tomohito Mikasa said for his part that Turkish-Japanese relations had begun 108 years ago. /Cumhuriyet/

    [13] 7 ONE MORE LEADING PKK TERRORIST SURRENDERS

    After six years of terrorist activity in the PKK terrorist organization, Fethi Demir, formerly responsible for PKK activities in Greece, has surrendered to Turkish security forces. Interior Ministry officials said yesterday that Demir had given important details about PKK-Greek relations. During questioning by the security forces, Demir also spoke about the increasing corruption in the PKK. /Sabah/

    [14] WORLD FREEDOM FOR PRESS DAY COMMEMORATED

    The World "freedom for press day" was also commemorated in Turkey yesterday. Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz issued a statement in which he stressed the need for freedom of expression in the Turkish press. /Sabah/

    [15] SATELLITE PROJECT FOR AGRICULTURE AND MINING

    A satellite project for agriculture and mining has been completed after eight years of work by Istanbul Technical University, Electrics-Electronics Faculty. The project aims to develop a satellite system for determining regions with high agriculture and mining potential. /Sabah/
