Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this
morning
[01] YILMAZ TO BAKU
Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz will go to Baku today to attend a ceremony
on getting Azeri early oil to international markets. It is expected
that Yilmaz, who will return within the same day, will give a speech
at the ceremony. /Milliyet/
[02] RUSSIA WARNS ANKARA
Russia has asked Turkey to withdraw its troops from northern Iraq
claiming that the current military operations there could cause
serious problems. Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Gennadi Tarasov
said that they had asked international parties to respect the
territorial integrity of Iraq. Noting that the scope of the operation
conducted by the Turkish Armed Forces in northern Iraq was very wide,
Tarasov said: "Turkey is directly intervening in the clashes between
the Kurdish groups. This development will increase the tension on the
region. Thus, Turkey should draw back its troops very soon."

[03] STATE MINISTER TANER TO WASHINGTON
The State Minister responsible for the economy will go Washington
today to meet with International Monetary Fund (IMF) representatives.
A Turkish delegation headed by Taner will discuss a "shadow programme"
with IMF officials. Taner will also meet with the President of the
IMF, Michel Camdessus, the U.S. Treasury Minister, Robert Rubin,
Chairman of the European desk of the IMF, Micheal Deppler. On 18
November Taner will meet with the World Bank Director of the Turkey
desk, Ajay Chibber. /Sabah/
[04] PKK OPERATION IN IZMIR
During operations against PKK terrorist organization in Izmir, 20
people have been arrested and 14 of them have been detained. Eight
PKK terrorists have been caught in Keban and Dogubeyazit in the
southeastern regions of Turkey. /Sabah/
[05] HOLBROOKE ARRIVES LIKE "A STORM"
US President Bill Clinton's Special Cyprus Envoy Richard Holbrooke
arrived yesterday in Ankara following a summit meeting in Nicosia with
Turkish Cypriot President Rauf Denktas and Greek Cypriot leader
Glafkos Clerides. Within the framework of his contacts in Ankara,
Holbrooke met with Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and
Foreign Minister Ismail Cem. Developments in Cyprus and Turkey's bid
for integration with Europe are top issues on Holbrooke's agenda of
discussions in the Turkish capital.
The visit of Holbrooke indicates that he is determined to take any
step to find a solution to the Cyprus issue. Neverthless, he told
reporters not to expect a breakthrough in Cyprus. Holbrooke stressed
that he wanted to see a bi-zonal, bi-communal Cyprus become a part of

[06] NEW HEAD OF PRESS AND INFORMATION DIRECTORATE
Foreign Ministry Deputy Chief of the Human Rights Department Aydin
Sezgin has been appointed head of the General Directorate for Press
and Information. The appointment was approved on Monday by President
Suleyman Demirel. The appointment was published in yesterday's
Official Gazette and has thus entered into effect. /Hurriyet/
