TURKISH PRESS REVIEWMONDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1997Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning[01] PKK SEPARATISTS ESCAPE TO PUK-CONTROLLED AREAUnder pressure from the Turkish military's "Twilight Operation", PKK separatists are escaping to the area of northern Iraq controlled by the Jalal Talabani-led Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). As the fighting continues, the rifts were developing in the PKK with some leading members leaving the Turkey-based separatist group.It is announced that nearly 50 members, including former directors of the PKK mouthpiece MED-TV, had opened an office in Germany to spearhead a campaign against PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan. It is commented that the reason of the division is the violence-based policies of the PKK. /Milliyet/Sabah_ [02] SYRIA DENIES MILITARY BUILD UP ON TURKISH BORDERSyria denied Turkish reports that it was mobilising its forces on the border with Turkey. "These reports are fabricated and baseless," an official Syrian spokesman said in a statement.On Friday, Turkey's semi-official Anatolian news agency said Syrian armoured units had built up near a triangle of territory where Syria, Turkey and northern Iraq meet. /All papers/ [03] TURKISH EXPORTERS ON THE INCREASETurkey's Exporters Assembly (TIM) has announced that in September Turkish exporters once again entered a trend of "high rate increase", the Anatolia news agency reported. The TIM released both the monthly exporters figures and the figures for the first nine months of this year, based on the records of the exporters' unions. According to these figures, for the first nine months of this year exporters showed an increase of 15 percent when compared to the same period in 1996, while September's exports showed an increase of 22 percent.[04] US AND TURKEY TAKE 'DECONFLICT' MEASURESWith both Turkish and American jet aircraft pursuing different objects simultaneously over the skies of Northern Iraq, 'deconflicting' measures had to be teken, the White House acknowledged. Turkish jest have performed many sorties over northern Iraq during the campaign launched together with Massoud Barzani's Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) troops aginst the PKK stronholds inside Iraq.A Pentagaon official, Collonel Crowley, who held a White House briefing, said that they would make sure that they deconflict cross-border operations and Northern Watch. Meanwhile the U.S. State Department on Friday expressed its satisfaction with the lisfting of emergency rule in three Turkish provinces. /All papers/ [05] BALKANS PEACE FORCE PLAN GETS POSITIVE REACTIONDefense Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ismet Sezgin, at the meeting of the Atlantic Treaty Association (ATA) in Bulgaria, said Turkey's idea for the establishment of a common peace force in the Balkans was greeted with interest by other countries. He said such a force would be very beneficial for the region and that they were ready to assist in any way for the establishment of such a force. Sezgin said that new policies should be determined and the international organizations should cooperate. /Hurriyet/Sabah_[06] 5 TERRORISTS KILLED BY TERRORISTSTerrorists from the outlawed PKK organization attacked gendarmerie unit on Friday near Catak, Van, the Anatolia news agency reported. During the clashes between the PKK terrorists and security members, five Turkish soldiers were killed, seven more were injured and two PKK members were killed.[07] PM YILMAZ, BANK PRIVATIZATIONS IS A PRIORITYPrime Minister Mesut Yilmaz said on Thursday the privatization of the country's loss-making state banks was a priority for his coalition government. "The privatization of public banks is a primary goal for us," Yilmaz said after a meeting with the head of the largest union federation, TURK-IS. /All papers/[08] DU PONT LYCRA: TURKEY, AN IMPORTANT TEXTILE CENTREGeneral Director of Du Pont Lycra, one of the world's leading lycra producer firm, Dennis H. Reiley said that they had just opened an office in Turkey and they would attach more importance to their works in Turkey. Reiley said: "Turkey will become the world textile centre. Leading textile firms in the world are giving importance to Turkey, which is the most developed country in textile of the Central Asia." He added that they aimed to increase their share in Turkish textile market./Hurriyet/[09] PRSEIDENT SULEYMAN DEMIREL TO VISIT GULF COUNTRIESPresident Suleyman Demirel will go to Kuweit today to start his Gulf region tour. Later he will fly to Quatar, United Arab Emirates and Suudia Arabia. During his Gulf region visit President Demirel will be accompanied by state ministers Isin Celebi and Refaiddin Sahin. /Cumhuriyet/Sabah_[10] SYRIAN CHIEF OF GENERAL STAFF TO VISIT TURKEYSyrian Chief of General Staff, Commander Amnon Lipkin Shahak will pay an official visit to Turkey in October within the framework of the Military Defense Cooperation Agreement between the two countries. Shakak, who will be received by President Suleyman Demirel, Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz and Defense Minister Ismet Sezgin, will hold contacts to strenghten military cooperation between Turkey and Syria. /Milliyet/[11] REPRESENTATIVE OF TALIBAN ASKS ANKARA TO ORGANIZE A PEACE CONFERENCEPermanent Representative of Taliban, Abdul Hakim Mucahid said in New York that they were ready to participate a peace conference to be held under the auspieces of Ankara. Mucahid added that Turkey had been supporting Afghanistan for the last 20 years and that they would welcome such a peace conference suggestion from Ankara. /Milliyet/[12] IMF DELEGATION IN TURKEYAn International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation, under the chairmanship of the Head of the Turkish Desk, Martin Hardy, will start its contacts today in Istanbul. The delegation will come to Ankara on 8 October and meet with officials responsible for Turkish economy. It is expected that IMF delegation will leave Turkey on 17 October./Sabah/[13] TURKISH FASHION SHOW IN MOSCOW90 Turkish textile firms participated to the "3rd Turkish Fashion Days" fair organized between 1-5 October in Moscow. During the fair Turkish textile, reay-to-wear, knitted-wear and shoes producers exhibited their products by fashion shows. /Cumhuriyet/[14] USDA EXTENDS TURKEY $ 250 MILLION CREDITThe U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has authorized $ 250 million in credit guarantees for the sale of U.S. agricultural commodities to Turkey under the GSM-102 Credit Guarantee Program for the fiscal year 1998. A statement from the U.S. embassy in Ankara on Friday said that GSM-102 scheme on loans of 90 days to three years for the purchase of a wide range of U.S. farm products, including grains, protein meals, cotton and wood products.USDA said it would offer Turkey a new programme, called the Supplier Credit Guarantee, next year, which was an adaptation of the GSM-102 programme and designed to assist U.S. exporters who wish to provide relatively short-term credit to their importers. /All papers/ [15] KANDEMIR SPEAKS TO ARMENIANS IN CHICAGOTurkish Ambassador to Washington, Nuzhet Kandemir was attending the Assembly of Turkish American Associations' (ATAA) annual convention together with ministers and VIPs from Turkey, as well as education and community leaders from the United States. A group of Armenian-American, Greek and Kurdish protestors demonstrated in front of the hotel where the ATAA convention was held. Kandemir walked out of the hotel and confronted his accusers saying that there was a Turkish community now in the United States who had every right to be in Chicago just like the protestors themselves.Later Kandemir addressing the press in the hotel said: "If these pitiful pro-violence crowds are desiring to be useful for Armenia and the Armenian community in these last few years of the 20th century, then they must encourage cooperation and rapprochement between people instead of hatred and anger.
