    Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning

    [01] DEMIREL WILL VISIT CROATIA TO BOOST TIES

    President Suleyman Demirel will start a two day working visit to Croatia on Monday. During his stay, he will sign agreements to prevent double taxation and futher cooperation in the field of agriculture. /All papers/

    [02] CEM IN NEW YORK FOR UN TALKS

    Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem, who arrived in New York over the weekend to participate in the 52nd General Assembly of the United Nations, will meet with his Iranian counterpart Ahmad Kamal Harrazi, on Monday.

    Cem has a very tight agenda in New York, including a meeting with foreign ministers from the EU countries. He is also expected to have bilateral talks with U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, British Foreign Minister Robin Cook, Irish Foreign Minister Michael Woods, and the Bosnian Foreign Minister.

    Ismail Cem has denied news to the effect that a tripartite summit would be held between Turkey, the U.S. and Greece. / Cumhuriyet/

    [03] WORLD BANK SUPPORT FOR TURKEY

    The World Bank has promised unlimited support for the eight year continuous education reform launched by the coalition government. The economic goals set up by the Yilmaz coalition government have won the approval of World Bank officials. In a meeting with State Minister Gunes Taner, Central Bank President Gazi Ercel and Treasury Undersecretary Mahfi Egilmez, during an IMF-World bank meeting held in Hong Kong over the weekend, World Bank President James Wolfenson pledge that he was ready to back the education reforms initiated in Turkey. Wolfsen expressed his satisfaction over the decisive and rational economic policies pursued by the government and said that if the government 'sticks to this course, it will definitely succeed.' /All papers/

    [04] KARADAYI RETURNS AFTER INTENSIVE NATO TALKS

    Arriving ƯN Ankara from the United States, Chief of General Staff Ismail Hakki Karadyi told reporters AT the weekend that the command structure of NATO is one of the most important issues concerning the international reorganization of the allied military command.

    He said that Turkey's suggestion for a functional formation for NATO's new command structure was welcomed positively. /Cumhuriyet/

    [05] SEZGIN HIGHLIGHTS GOALS FOR IDEF'79

    Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Ismet Sezgin said on Sunday that the third International Defense Industry and Civil Aviation Fair (IDEF'97) which is to take place in the capital on September 23-26 carries a particular meaning from the point of view of Turkey's efforts in promoting the policy of deterrence in its region.

    Sezgin said that within the framework of IDEF'97, organized by the Turkish Armed Forces, more than 200 firms, including the world's leading defense producers Turkish defense industry organizations would come together. He pointed out that 74 percent of the participating firms were from foreign countries.

    [06] TOURISTS PREFER TO HOLIDAY IN TURKEY

    Turkey welcomed 6.5 million tourists in the first eight months of this year. This is the first time more than one million tourists have visited Turkey in the month of August. It is noticed that Turkey has become a strong rival among the other Mediterranean countries. Many tourists from northern European countries, who previously visited Spain and Italy, have altered their choice of destination to Turkey. Turkish tourism faced an unprecedented influx of visitors from countries like Albania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland and Bulgaria in 1997. /All papers/

    [07] TOP EU OFFICIAL VISITS TURKEY

    The European Parlaiment's Commission of Foreign Affairs President, Christian Democrat Deputy Tom Spencer of the U.K., came to Turkey on Friday at the invitation of Turkey's Foreign Ministry, the Anatolia news agency reported. Spencer met with Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Ambassador Onur Oymen. Before the meeting, Spencer told the press that he was visiting Turkey to listen to Ankara's opinion on EU-Turkey relations.

    During his visit Spencer also met with Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and the State Minister responsible for Greek and Cypriot affairs, Sukru Sina Gurel.

    [08] 20 SEPARATISTS KILLED IN SOUTHEAST

    During weekend operations conducted by security forces in the southeastern region, 20 members of the PKK were killed by the armed forces. According to a statement released by the Office of the Governor of the Emergency rule Region, 20 terrorists were killed in the Diyarbakir, Bingol, Hakkari, and Siirt provinces of Southeast Anatolia. Five others were arrested, while nine surrendered of their own accord, the Anatolia news agency reported. Turkish armed forces operations against the separatists are reportedly continuing. /Cumhuriyet/

    [09] TRNC WARNS EU IT WILL INTEGRATE WITH TURKEY

    Anakara disagreed with the European Union's statements on Friday that "All communities on the island would benefit from (Greek) Cypriot accession to the EU", finding it contradictory to the bi-communal principle, which is an essential element in the U.N.'s position in negotiations on the future of the island.

    The Turkish Foreign Ministry, which released a statement referring to the comments made by the EU on September 15 following a meeting, said that both Turkey and Turkish Cyprus had repeatedly explained to the EU that the Greek Cypriot application for membership in the union - acting as the sole community on the island - is invalid both in political and legal terms.

    A similar announcement was issued from the Foreign Ministry of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, stating that further insistence on EU membership would mean further steps begin taken towards integration between Turkish Cyprus and Turkey. /All papers/

    [10] SOLANA: CYPRUS WON'T BECOME NATO MEMBER

    Javier Solana, NATO Secretary General, put to rest on Thursday recent rumors circulating in Washington that NATO might be predisposed to "force" a solution in Cyprus by admitting a united Cyprus as the 17th member of the Alliance

    Solana also said he was still supporting the development of confidence building measures between Turkey and Greece. /All papers/

    [11] SEPTEMBER BRITISH TRADE MISSION VISIT TO TURKEY

    A British trade mission, representing more than 20 companies, will visit Turkey September 22-26 to seek markets for its goods, the British Consulate in Istanbul announced in a written statement on Thursday.

    British exports to Turkey have increased 25 percent over the past 12 months and its imports from Turkey have risen 17 percent due to the customs union between Turkey and the European Union. The statement said that the Turkish market offers opportunity for business in water and sewage treatment and pollution control, telecommunications, retailing, medical and hospital equipment, natural gas, energy, food processing and packing. /All papers/

    [12] $ 162 MILLIONS WORTH OF SELL-OFFS

    The Supreme Privatization Council (OYK) on Thursday gave the green light to the privatization of 162 million-worth dollars of state assets, the Anatolia news agency reported.

    State Minister Isin Celebi made the announcement after the OYK meeting, noting that four insurance companies and the nine facilities of SEKA were to be added to the list of state-owned companies to be sold-off in the near future.

    [13] HYUNDAI TURKEY VENTURE BEGINS PRODUCTION

    South Korean car maker Hyundai began production in a $ 335-million plant in western Turkey on Saturday under a joint venture with the local Kibar Holding group. The plant will sell its first output in late October or early November, said Ali Kibar, the general manager of the joint venture Hyundai-Assan Otomotive Ticaret during the inauguration ceremony.

    President Suleyman Demirel inaugurated the plant at the opening ceremony, also attended by Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz. Park said the joint venture, formed with equal the participation of Hyundai and Kibar, had so far invested $ 150 million of an eventual $ 335 million. He said the first cars to be produced would contain 35 percent Turkish parts, but this figure would increase to a target of 70 percent. /All papers/

    [14] DISCORD WITH ISRAEL OVER APPOINTMENT OF AMBASSADOR

    Ankara does not approve the appointment to Ankara of a so-called 'pro Armenian' ambassador. Ankara has not as yet recognized the credentials of the new Israeli Ambassador Ehud Toledano, appointed two months ago. Toledona, a professor of Ottoman history at Tel-Aviv University, is said to have accused Turkey during a speech he delivered 15 years ago of against the Armenians. /Milliyet/

    [15] TURKEY PREPARES FOR EUROPEAN COUNCIL SUMMIT MEETING

    Turkey is lobbying intensively for the acceptance of a positive action plan dealing with antiracism, social justice and the struggle against terrorism at the European Council summit to be held on October 10-11 in Strasbourg. Heads of state and government of more than 40 member countries will attend the summit. Turkey will be represented by Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz and Foreign Minister Ismail Cem. /Sabah/
