Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this
morning.
[01] YILMAZ: "WE WILL DEFINITELY WIN A VOTE OF CONFIDENCE"
Prime Minister-designate Mesut Yilmaz said yesterday that the
government he will form at the end of discussions with other party
leaders would definitely be able to win a vote of confidence. In a
meeting with President Demirel yesterday, Yilmaz gave the president
details about his contacts initiated in a move to set up a government.
Yilmaz is expected to the cabinet list to the president early next
week after a second round of talks with party leaders. /All papers/
[02] TURKEY APPEARS IN EU PHOTO
At a weekly press conference yesterday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman
Omer Akbel said that on Friday, Turkey, along with other 11 countries
in line to join the European Union, will participate in an EU meeting
in Amsterdam held to brief all candidate countries. While previously
Turkey was subject to procedures different from those implemented with
respect to other applicants, now Turkey will be treated in the same
way as the other candidate countries, Akbel said. The meeting carries
additional importance for Turkey because it gives Turkey a chance of
being included in the "family photo" of the EU. Foreign Minister
Tansu Ciller will represent Turkey at the meeting. /Milliyet/
[03] TURKEY-US DEFENCE TALKS
Top representative from the US Defence Department, John Lodall and
diplomat responsible for Cyprus and Greece, Carey Cavanaugh are in
Ankara for talks with Turkish officials about more defence cooperation
between Turkey and the US.
Today Lodall and Cavanaugh will talk with Minister for Defence Turhan
Tayan, military leaders and Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Onur

[04] US PUTTING PRESSURE ON GREECE
The US administration is slowly putting more pressure on Athens to
take concrete steps towards dialogue with Turkey to end tensions in
the Aegean region. US officials have stressed again that they want to
see "full cooperation" from both sides in the region.
Although Greece has complained about Turkish naval vessels visiting
northern Cyprus ports, the Greek prime minister has spoken about "good
intentions" on the part of Greece in connection with a new dialogue.

[05] VENUE FOR CYPRUS TALKS REVEALED
The venue for UN sponsored talks between the leaders of the Turkish
and Greek Cypriot communities on Cyprus has been announced as taking
place in Amenia, a small town about two hours away from New York. On
July 9-13 Greek Cypriot leader Glafkos Klerides and President Rauf
Denktas of the Turkish republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), will meet
there to renew their dialogue. /Milliyet/
[06] TURKEY AND THE EU
European Commission Representative to Turkey, Ambassador Michael Lake
has again confirmed that Turkey is on the way to full membership in
the European Union (EU). He noted however that domestic political
developments did have a bearing on EU attitudes towards Turkey's moves
in that direction. Lake added that apart from sending out "positive
signals" Turkey also had to fully conform to EU standards and

[07] ASSAULT AGAINST INTERSTAR
Unidentified assailants fired gunshots at the headquarters of
Interstar private TV channel early Wednesday morning. The attackers
fled. While nobody was injured in the incident, one bullet shattered
a fifth floor window. Nobody has claimed responsibility for the
attack.
President Demirel, Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan and Deputy Prime
Minister Tansu Ciller released messages condemning the attack.

[08] NSC MEETING
The National Security Council (NSC) chaired by President Suleyman
Demirel convened yesterday in the Cankaya Palace. The Council
recommended an extension of the state of emergency rule in nine
southeastern provinces for a further four months, and an extension of
the Reconnaissance Force mandate for six months. During the meeting,
relations with foreign countries supporting the PKK terrorist
organization were reviewed, and activities of fundamentalist
foundations in Turkey were discussed. /Cumhuriyet/
[09] FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF BSEC
At a press conference yesterday Foreign Ministry Spokesman Omer Akbel
commented on the 5th anniversary of the establishment of the Black Sea
Economic Cooperation (BSEC) organization. Akbel said that Turkey was
giving full support to the development of the organization, and added
that duriing the last five years, the BSEC had set itself up as an
organization with an international identity, and had made great
progress with respect to its institutional formation. /Cumhuriyet/
[10] PKK TERRORISTS KILL THREE SOLDIERS
Terrorists from the outlawed PKK organization attacked on Tuesday an
oil rig in the province of Batman and killed three soldiers. Four
other soldiers were wounded in the attack. Operations are underway to
capture the terrorists. /Hurriyet/
[11] SYRIA ACCUSES TURKEY AND ISRAEL OF CARRYING OUT IMAGINARY MANEUVRES
Syria added further tension to its already strained relations with
Turkey claiming on Wednesday that Turkey and Israel were carrying out
joint military maneuvres off the Syrian coast near Latakia where Arab
foreign ministers were gathered for a high level meeting. Turkish
officials denied the allegations, and described Damascus' claims as
"the height of irresponsibility." /Milliyet/
[12] STRUGGLE AGAINST DRUG TRAFFICKING MEETING
Representatives of 36 countries, have come to Istanbul for a three-day
meeting that started yesterday to discuss cooperation in combatting
drug smuggling. The meeting was organized by POMPIDO, an
international organization set up to raise international support for
the struggle against drug smuggling. During the meeting, Turkish
officials stressed that the PKK terrorist organization played a key
role in international drug trafficking. POMPIDO Secretary General
Christopher Lucket said that money laundering, drug smuggling and
terrorism were interrelated issues and had to be considered within the

[13] TURCO-EGYPTIAN COOPERATION
Turkey and Egypt have signed a protocol for tourism cooperation,
following a Turco-Egyptian joint commission meeting in Istanbul.
According to the protocol, both countries agreed to undertake measures
for improving tourism relations. /Cumhuriyet/
[14] BIDDING FOR TURCO-IRANIAN PIPELINE
Bidding for the construction of the Erzurum-Sivas-Ankara section of a
pipeline to carry Iranian natural gas to Turkey was held yesterday in
Ankara. Ten companies presented tenders for the construction of the
410-km long section of the pipeline. The results of the bidding will
be announced within a month. The construction of the pipeline will be
completed in 20 months. /Cumhuriyet/
[15] HASAN DENIZKURDU RESIGNS FROM DYP
Izmir deputy Hasan Denizkurdu resigned yesterday from the DYP. As a
result, DYP seats in Parliament have dropped to 114. Denizkurdu was
previously called to the party's disciplinary board on charges of
disrupting the harmony and tranquility within the party. /Cumhuriyet/
