Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this
morning.
[01] SECURITY FORCES CONTROL MANY PKK CAMPS IN N.IRAQ
Turkish troops consolidated their control in parts of northern Iraq,
on Thursday in a two-week-old anti-separatist operation. Military
sources reported that Turkish forces have taken complete control over
mant areas of the Kurdish enclave where outlawed Kurdistan Workers
Party (PKK) separatists were active. It said that among areas under
Turkish control were Snath, Khwakurk, Zap, Sidikan, Nerva, Rekan and
Berwani.
The Park Holding group has donated TL 20 billion to two foundations
for members of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), the Mehmetcik
Foundation and the Rehabilitation and Health Care Center of the Armed
Forces. Deputy Chief of General Staff Gen. Cevik Bir, who received
the check, thanked the representatives of the company and praised the
work of the Turkish forces subduing terrorists of the outlawed
Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in northern Iraq and restoring order in

[02] ANNIVERSARY OF ISTANBUL CONQUEST CELEBRATED
Turks celebrated the 544th anniversary of the conquest of Istanbul by
the Ottoman Turks led by Sultan Fatih Mehmet II with mock battles,
fireworks, ceremonies and prayers on Thursday. Istanbul Mayor Tayyip
Erdogan and Lieutenant General Edip Baser, commander of the Third Army
Corps began the ceremonies with a visit to the Mausoleum of Mehmet II,
the conqueror of Istanbul in 1453 and left wreaths in front of the
Mausoleum./Hurriyet/
[03] NATO MINISTERS DISCUSS ENLARGEMENT
NATO foreign ministers on Thursday opened a meeting in the Portuguese
town of Sintra aimed at discussing the North Atlantic Treaty
Organization's (NATO) eastword expansion. Turkey is represented by a
delegation headed by Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Onur Oymen.
The heads of state and government of the 16 NATO member countries will
meet in Madrid in July to decide which countries they will invite to
negotiations on joining the Atlantic alliance./Sabah/
[04] CYPRUS FRIENDSHIP FOOTBALL MATCHES
For the first time in forty years, next month there will be football
matches between the two communities on Cyprus. The Greek Cypriot AEL
team will play against the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
Cetinkaya team in friendly matches on the 12th and 19th of June.
It is expected that at least twenty-five thousand spectators will
watch the matches. /Sabah/
[05] ANOTHER NEW BANK
Even while debate continues over the number of banks now operating in
Turkey, plans are afoot for yet another new bank. Turkish workers in
Europe and Turkish businessmen are preparing to set up a new banking
facility in line with European demands. Although there seems to be
some doubt about whether or not the project will be allowed to go
through, Turkish businessmen say they are determined to complete the

[06] ERBAKAN INVITES CHARLES
State Minister Abdullah Gul, who attended a luncheon following the
opening of an Oxford University Islamic Research Centre on Wednesday
at the St.James Palace in London, presented a letter from Turkish
Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan inviting Prince Charles to Turkey.
Charles said that he would be very pleased to visit Turkey, which he
has previously visited three times. /Hurriyet/
[07] UN OPENS OFFICE IN DIYARBAKIR
Paul an Hanswijck de Jonge, UN Permanent Coordinator in Turkey, noting
that they were planning to open a regional office in Diyarbakir, said
that the office would provide an opportunity for closer technical
cooperation with development organizations in the region. /Hurriyet/
[08] FOREIGN EXCHANGE RESERVES TOTAL $16 BILLION
Foreign exchange reserves in the Central Bank have again passed the
$16 billion mark. According to Central Bank data, foreign exchange
reserves in the Central Bank increased by $576 million between 16-23
May and reached $16.085 billion. Foreign exchange reserves in
commercial banks amounted to $8.8 billion on 9 May, while gold
reserves totalled $1.4 billion. /Hurriyet/
[09] BANKING EDUCATION FOR TURKISH-SPEAKING PEOPLE
A cooperation protocol, which envisages education in banking, has been
signed between Ziraat Bank and the Turkish Cooperation and Development
Agency (TIKA). The protocol, which aims to support the development of
the current banking system in Caucasia, Central Asian republics and
Balkan countries with a "Banking Education Programme", was signed by
Head of the Executive Board and Deputy General Director of Ziraat Bank
Salih Sevki Doruk and TIKA Chairman Ambassador Necati Utkan.

[10] BAYKAL TO GO TO SWEDEN
Chairman of the Republican People's Party (CHP) Deniz Baykal will
represent Turkey at the third congress of the European Socialist Party
in Malmo, Sweden on 4 June. The theme of the congress will be "A new
Europe and the responsibility of the left". Following contacts, which
will last for four days, leaders will meet at a luncheon on 6 June.

[11] US LOBBYING FOR TURKEY
Officials in the Clinton administration are working hard in Europe in
preparation for the eastward expansion of NATO and the celebrations
for the 50th anniversary of the Truman Doctrine and the Marshal Plan.
In a speech on the integration of Europe, US President Bill Clinton
stressed the importance of Turkey, and US Secretary of State Madeleine
Albright urged Europe to open its doors to Turkey. /Milliyet/
[12] TURCO-GREEK RELATIONS DISCUSSED AT CARNEGIE FORUM
Military specialists, journalists, politicians and academicians from
Turkey, Greece and the US gathered together yesterday in Istanbul
within the framework of the Carnegie Forum. The two-day meeting is
organized by the Carnegie International Peace Foundation and the
Carnegie Commission for Preventing Deadly Clashes. During the
meeting, Turco-Greek disputes were taken in hand and possible
solutions were discussed. /Sabah/
[13] UN MEETING ON CYPRUS
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan is planning to bring together the
leaders of the Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities in Cyprus on July
9. Both leaders will meet for the first time after a three-year
break. The meeting will take place in the environments of New York.

[14] ARSON IN HOLLAND
Six suspects arrested in connection to a recent arson attack in The
Hague, Holland, said that they had thrown fire bombs at two
restaurants owned by Turks. The suspects however rejected claims that
they were responsible for a recent arson arson attack when six
