TURKISH PRESS REVIEWTUESDAY, MAY 27, 1997Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning[01] PRESIDENT DEMIREL TO ATTEND NATO-RUSSIA SUMMITPresident Suleyman Demirel affirmed Monday that "Turkey will continue to demonstrate goodwill towards the newly established relations between Russia and NATO," before he left for the NATO-Russia summit in Paris.Demirel held a press conference before his departure to attend the NATO-Russia summit to be followed by a ceremony on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Marshall Plan to be held in the Hague./Sabah/ [02] DEMIREL VISITS BALTIC COUNTRIESPresident Suleyman Demirel is to pay an official visit to the Baltic countries of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia on June 2-5, the Foreign Ministry announced. This, the first visit at presidential level, is in response to recent visits by presidents of those countries to Turkey. An important outcome of the trip will be free trade, health, security cooperation and air and maritime transportation deals which are expected to be signed./All papers/[03] DOSTUM SEEKS SUPPORTGeneral Abdul Rashid Dostum, who was ousted from northern Afghanistan by Islamic Taleban fighters and fled to Turkey, has not applied for asylum, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Omer Akbel said on Monday at his weekly press conference. Akbel said: "He is welcome in Turkey. The length of his stay in Turkey depends on his own wishes."Akbel at his press conference also added that the evacuation of 44 Turks in Afghanistan included personnel from the Turkish Consulate in Mezar-i Sharif, and that they were in good health. He noted that Turkey had no official contact with Afghanistan. Dostum also pointed out that his request to Turkey was to take the lead in bringing war the to an end in Afghanistan. /Milliyet/Cumhuriyet/Hurriyet/ [04] AZERBAIJANI PARLIAMENT LEADER VISITS ANKARAAzerbaijani Parliament Speaker Murtuz Aleskerov arrived in Ankara on Monday for a five-day visit as an official guest of his Turkish counterpart, Mustafa Kalemli. Aleskerov will also meet with representatives of several Turkish politicai party leaders, the Anatolia news agency reported.[05] 'ANATOLIA IS THE OWNER OF TROY'The 19th international excavation, research and archeology symposium has begun in Ankara. The conference includes a large number of foreign archaeologists and scientists.Prof. Manfred Korfmann, who is leading excavations at Troy, said that Trojan masterpieces which were stolen 100 years ago should be returned to where they belonged and asked for support from the local and foreign scientists attending the symposium. Culture Minister Ismail Kahraman said that efforts were underway to preserve the historical pieces in Turkey from destruction, and to repair and present them to the world of science. The symposium will end on Monday, May 30./Cumhuriyet/ [06] AMBASSADOR GROSSMAN PAYS A FAREWELL VISIT TO KALEMLIU.S. Ambassador to Ankara Mark Grossman declared his support for democracy in Turkey on Monday during a visit to parliamentary Speaker Mustafa Kalemli. Grossman paid a farewell visit to Kalemli on the occasion of leaving his post in Turkey. He added that they supported Turkey's territorial integrity, their security partnership and economic development of Turkey.Noting that Grossman had much important services in Turkey, Kalemli said: "In his new appointment as Assistant Secretary of State responsible for Canadian and European Affairs, he will be of great help in our relations as a diplomat who knows Turkey very well. I hope he will continue to give important service to Turkey."/Hurriyet/ [07] THIRD TURKISH-GREEK FORUM IN ISTANBULThe Third Turkish-Greek Forum began yesterday in Istanbul with opening addresses by Turkish-Greek Business Council Chairman Rahmi Koc, Greek Entrepreneurs Association Chairman Athanasse Lavidas and State Minister Abdullah Gul.Thirty-five businessmen from Greece, Turkey, Greek Cyprus and Turkish Cyprus met in a whole-day session which was also closed to the press on Sunday. The sessions were grouped around the following subjects: the role of businessmen and how much leverage they had; the contribution which the business world could make in cooperating and providing an atmosphere of security; the opportunities and possibilities for businessmen in the region and in the Balkans, the Middle East, Central Asia and a united Europe; and how much businessmen had helped in achieving political stability, security and increased commercial relations./Milliyet/Sabah_ [08] MILITARY OPERATION TENSIONS INCREASINGTension over the Turkish military incursion into northern Iraq is increasing. The Iranian leadership has sent a message to Ankara calling for the immediate withdrawal of Turkish military units. In reply Turkey sent back a tough response that said in effect, that Turkey would pull out when the job was done, and that Iran should mind its own business.Turkey has a large number of troops, armoured units and aircraft deployed in northern Iraq in what has become a "normal" yearly Spring operation against the PKK terrorist organization. This time however, it has lasted rather longer than usual and reaction is setting in. Turkish forces continue, despite growing reaction, to clean out the PKK strongholds in the region. /All papers/ [09] PRAISE FOR HURRIYET NEWSPAPEROne of Turkey's largest national daily newspapers, Hurriyet newspaper, has been highly praised in the journal of the British Standards Institute (BSI). The British Standards Institute comments on the high standards of the paper, the quality and the commitment of the staff. /Hurriyet/[10] AWARDS FOR TURKISH COMPANIESTwo Turkish companies, Kackar Trade and the Kulahcioglu Group have been awarded the "Technology and Quality" award as presented yearly by the Trade Leaders Club./Hurriyet/[11] PILOT LOST IN MARMARA SEAA civilian pilot on the way to a crop spraying job near Bursa crashed into the Marmara Sea and disappeared. The pilot's last message was that he had run into bad weather during his approach to the Bursa side of the Marmara Sea. Although wreckage from the plane has been found, so far there is no sign of the pilot. The search continues. /Sabah/[12] PARIS SUMMITSParis is the scene of a number of important meetings right now. Apart from the French elections, Paris is the venue for NATO meetings and the annual OECD ministers conference. State Minister Ufuk Soylemez will represent Turkey at the OECD meeting. /Sabah/END.
