[03] CILLER: TURKEY HAS A SAY IN WEU
On her return from a Western European Union (WEU) Council of Ministers
meeting, Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller said agreement was reached on
Turkey's participation in all stages of operations for which the WEY
would use NATO facilities. Ciller said that Turkey's next goal was
full membership in the WEU, the designated defence arm of the European
Union.
Ciller said that she had also met with her Greek counterpart Pangalos
and added: "We both want to continue with dialogue and we hope that
the "committee of wise men" will meet at the end of June, if not
sooner." She noted that Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Onur Oymen
would visit Greece by the end of this month.
[04] TURKISH AND GREEK MILITARY MEET IN ATHENS
Turkish and Greek military officials came together in Athens to
discuss steps for improving bilateral relations. Talks will continue
until the weekend. Both sides are expected to take in hand
confidence-building measures with respect to the Cyprus question and
Aegean disagreements. /Cumhuriyet/
[05] TURKEY BUYS NEW MISSILES
Turkey is planning to buy Arrow missiles jointly produced by Israel
and the US. Defence News magazine, published in the US reported that
Turkey was willing to buy anti-ballistic missiles that would serve as
a deterrent to regional threats. Israeli officials are lobbying in
Washington in favour of the deal. The issue was first discussed
during a visit to Tel Aviv by Second Chief of General Staff General
Cevik Bir early this month.
[06] IRAN AND SYRIA AGAINST TURCO-ISRAELI COOPERATION
El-Wasat weekly magazine published in Saudi Arabia has given first
page coverage to Chief of General Staff General Karadayi's recent
visit to Israel. The magazine claims that agreements for military
cooperation signed between Turkey and Israel have polarized the Middle
East, and warns that tensions in the region could rise. Syria and
Iran, both alarmed by Turco-Israeli military cooperation, are
discussing steps for developing closer ties in reaction to the
developments in the region. /Hurriyet/
