Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this
morning
[01] TURKEY AND POLAND TO ESTABLISH STRATEGIC COOPERATION
President Suleyman Demirel announced to the Polish Parliament that his
current visit to Poland was important for the establishment of
strategic cooperation between the two countries, a plan which promises
to have a bright future. He added that in order to achieve this, the
private sector should be involved, and that a free trade agreement
between Turkey and Poland should be concluded as soon as possible.
Demirel also provided information about Turkey to the Turco-Polish
Business Council. He said that there were approximately 1000 Turkish
businessmen working in Poland, and he invited their Polish
counterparts to Turkey. President Demirel also had a 45-minute
meeting with Polish Prime Minister Wlodwzimierz Cimoszewicz.

[02] TURKISH SCIENTIST WORKING AT NASA
NASA wants to continue the experimental project dealing with the
flight of the Columbia Space Shuttle, which was designed in 1995 by
Nurcan Bac, a Turkish professor from METU. If the same or a more
improved experiment is carried out by the International Space Station
on Turkey's behalf, NASA will be pleased," the Anatolia news agency
reported on Thursday.
[03] TRAINING PLANE CRASHES: 2 PILOTS KILLED
Two pilots died when an air force T-37C training jet crashed near the
western town of Akhisar near Manisa on Thursday. Military sources
identified the deceased pilots as Ltu. Hasan Demirel and Ltu.
Ibrahim Ozturk. The jet, which took off from Cigli Air Base near
Izmir, was on a training mission when the accident occured. Air Force
Commander General Ahmet Corekci visited the crash site and was briefed
on the accident. Further investigation into the incident is

[04] 32 PKK MILITANTS KILLED IN SOUTHEAST OPERATIONS
Thirty-two militants from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK)
have been killed by security forces in the southeastern provinces of
Hakkari and Bitlis. Meanwhile in Sirnak one militant was captured
while another surrendered to government forces. /Cumhuriyet/
[05] FOREIGN JOURNALISTS IN GAP
Attending tour organized by the Southeast Anatolian Project (GAP)
Administration, representatives of the foreign press, agencies and
newspapers in Turkey visited the Chairman of the Chamber of Trade and
Industry, Sirin Yigit, in Diyarbakir. The 50-member group continued
their contacts in Diyarbakir after visiting Sanliurfa and Mardin.

[06] EMLAK BANK TO OPEN A BRANCH IN GERMANY
Emlak Bank and the European- Turkish Businessmen's Association (ATIAD)
will open a joint bank in Germany. It is expected that preparations
will be finished by September. Emlak Bank is also continuing its
efforts to open a branch in New York and an off-shore bank in Cyprus.
Emlak Bank has increased its share to 6.5 % in Turkey's foreign trade
activities. Bank officials said that they aimed to increase their
share to 15 %. /Sabah/
[07] TURKEY'S GROWTH RATE INCREASES
World Bank Vice-President, Jean-Francois Rischard said in statement to
Finance Magazine that Turkey had a high 7 % growth rate. Announcing
that this rate was among the highest percentages in the world, Richard
said that Turkey had a dynamic private sector and geographical

[08] CHAIRMAN OF THE TURCO-AMERICAN ASSOCIATIONS FEDERATION DIES
Chairman of the Turkish-American Associations Federation, Dr. Sevket
Karaduman died yesterday. Karaduman, who was 45 years old, has been
the chairman of the federation since 1993. The body of Dr. Karaduman
will be flown back to Turkey today, foa a funeral in his home town.

[09] KARADAYI VISITS ALBANIA
Chief of General Staff Gen.Ismail Hakki Karadayi is going to Tirana,
the capital of Albania, today to make contacts and inspect the Turkish
unit taking part in the multi-national force established because of
the conflict in that country. /Cumhuriyet/
[10] CEVIK BIR GOES TO CYPRUS
Deputy Chief of General Staff Gen.Cevik Bir is going to the Turkish
Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) today. Bir, who will stay in the
TRNC for three days, will inspect the Turkish Peace Forces and the
Cypriot Turk Regiment. Bir will also hold contacts with TRNC
officials regarding political developments in Cyprus and hold meetings
with commanders of the Peace Forces and the regiment. /Cumhuriyet/
[11] FOREIGN PROPOSAL FOR IZMIR TERM TRANSACTIONS MARKET
The World Bank has brought three important proposals for cooperation
from the US, Egypt and the Netherlands to the Izmir Board of Trade
regarding the Izmir Term Transactions Market. A World Bank delegation
headed by Severin Kodderitzsch visited Izmir on Wednesday. The
delegation conveyed a proposal for partnership from the Chicago Board
of Trade (CBOT) to officials of the Izmir Board of Trade who said that
they would take up the proposals of the World Bank in the forthcoming
days. Meanwhile, a five-person delegation headed by Uzbekistan
Minister Yuriy Saronov also met with officials of the Izmir Board of
Trade. Saronov called for cooperation and requested support for the
development of the Uzbek stock exchange. /Cumhuriyet/
[12] ERBAKAN SENDS A LETTER TO SADDAM HUSEYIN
Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Recai Kutan went to
Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, with an 18-person delegation yesterday.
Kutan will hold meetings to develop political and economic relations.
Kutan, who will stay in Iraq for three days, will meet with Iraqi Head
of State Saddam Huseyin, Deputy President Taha Yasin Ramazan, Deputy
Prime Minister Tarik Aziz and the Iraqi Energy and Oil Minister.
During the meetings, the issue of increasing the amount of oil
transported to Turkey through the Kirkuk-Yumurtalik oil pipeline will
be taken up. Kutan will deliver a letter from Turkish Prime Minister
Necmettin Erbakan to Saddam Huseyin. /Milliyet/
[13] NEW UN PACKAGE FOR CYPRUS
It is reported that Gustave Feissel, Cyprus Special Deputy Envoy of
the UN Secretary-General Annan, has completed his contacts in New York
and brought a package of proposals which aims to overcome difficulties
regarding issues such as sovereignty and equality. According to a
Greek Cypriot radio, Feissel will return to Cyprus from New York
tomorrow and will meet with Greek Cypriot leader Glafkos Klerides and
President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Rauf
Denktas separately. /Milliyet/
[14] SAUDI ARABIAN PRINCE IN ISTANBUL
The son-in-law of Saudi Arabian King Fahd, Prince Muhammed Fahd Al
Suderi arrived in Turkey yesterday. In a statement to press members
at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport, Suderi said that they wanted to make
investments in Turkey in tourism and municipalities and will hold
meetings to this end. Suderi will stay in Turkey for 10 days.

[15] OPPORTUNITY FOR SMALL FIRMS IN GERMANY
Visyon Group, a Turkish company operating in Germany, has opened up a
"Connection Business Centre" in Dusseldorf to help small and medium
sized Turkish companies operate more effectively in Germany.
The business centre will provide very cheap but well equipped office
facilities to companies just starting out in Germany. President of
the Vizyon Group, Ulvi Alkan, said that his centre was there to help
Turkish companies reach bigger and better targets in Germany.

[16] MOVES TO ATTRACT FOREIGN INVESTMENT
Steps are being taken to encourage more foreign investment in Turkey
now that the privatization process has taken tighter hold. President
of the Privatization Administration, Ismail Karakaya, has been holding
meetings in Washingon to build up confidence in the Turkish market.
The MIGA Agency (multilateral investment guarantee agency) will set up
promotions to encourage foreign interest in the Turkish privatization
