Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this
morning.
[01] ATTACK ON TURKISH CONSULATE IN JERUSALEM
A petrol bomb was hurled at the Turkish consulate in Arab East
Jerusalem on Sunday and flammable material was thrown on the consul-
general's car but no one was hurt, Israeli police said. Police said
that three "non-Jews"were detained, one of them with an inflammable
substance on his hands and singed hair. Both Israeli and Turkish
officials pointed to the assault coinciding with the arrival in Israel
of the Turkish Second Chief of the General Staff General Cevik Bir.

[02] ALIYEV VISITS TURKEY
Azeri President Haydar Aliyev will visit today Ankara to forge closer
relations and discuss with Turkey the prospects for establishing peace
in the Caucasus. The visit was originally scheduled for early April,
but was postponed because of the death of Nationalist Movement Party
(MHP) leader Alparslan Turkes. According to diplomatic sources, the
construction of the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline to carry Azeri oil to world
markets will not be the main topic of discussion as previously

[03] TURCO-ISRAELI COOPERATION
Defence Minister Turhan Tayan, returning from a visit to Israel, told
a news conference on Saturday that Ankara and Tel Aviv shared the same
position against Syria, a country that he said was providing support
to terrorism. Turkey declared its intention to continue concerted
joint efforts with Israel against terrorism. Tayan denied reports
about a joint maneuver with Israel and the US. /All papers/
[04] PKK INVOLVED IN PLOT AGAINST ROMANIAN PRESIDENT
A Bulgarian daily newspaper reported that the PKK terrorist
oreganization was involved in an assassination plot against Romanian
President Emile Konstantinescu during his visit to the Bulgarian
capital of Sofia on April 30. Konstantinescu escaped the
assassination attempt when the police found a professionally prepared
bomb put on the exit of the airport. /Sabah/
[05] D-8 COUNTRIES TO COOPERATE ON AIRCRAFT AND CAR MANUFACTURING
At a meeting on Saturday, the members of the D-8 organization have
agreed to cooperate in aircraft and car manufacturing, as well as in
electronics, the Anatolia news agency reported. D-8 representatives
will meet soon to discuss details about cooperation in aircraft
production.
In the same connection, Sedat Celikdogan, chief adviser at the Prime
Ministry, said that Turkey has received proposals by the McDonnel
Douglas, Boeing and Airbus companies for manufacturing jointly 54
passenger aircraft. /All papers/
[06] ATTACK AGAINST FLASH TV
A group of 50 or 60 people attacked the Istanbul facilities of private
Flash TV channel, causing damage but no casualties. The attackers
raided the studios in the bureau, some braking windows and shooting at
random. The attackers run away after five minutes before police could
get to the scene.
On the other hand, the Tranportation Ministry ordered "indefinite
suspension" of broadcasts of the Flash TV on the ground that the
uplink and radio-link devices of the station were "illegally imported"
and "illegally operated". /All papers/
[07] COVERT WARNING BY IRAN
The Iranian daily newspaper Teheran Times, published in English and
known to be reflecting the views of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, has
used inappropriate phrasing that fall short of good neighbourly
relations in its editorial article regarding Turkey. The paper warned
that Turkey would become a second Algeria. The paper accuses the
Turkish military to be serving the interests of Israel and the US.

[08] TURKEY'S POPULATION RANKED 17TH LARGEST IN THE WORLD
According to a report by the Population Reference Bureau based in
Washington, Turkey is ranked 17th in the world with respect to its
population, the Anatolia news agency reported. Presently, Turkey's
population is over 63 million, and is expected to increase to 76.5
million in 2010. /Sabah/
[09] TURKEY WINS BEST PRIZE IN EUROVISON SO FAR
Turkey on Saturday night came in third in the Eurovision song contest,
thus achieving its best result so far in Turkey's 18 years of
competition. Twenty-five nations competed in the song contest, held
live at Dublin's Point Depot complex, which was broadcast to an
estimated television audience of 300 million. Turkey was represented
by Sebnem Paker with teh song "Listen" and maneged to scoop up 121
