Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this
morning.
[01] AIR OF SPRING REIGNS OVER TURCO-GREEK RELATIONS
Turkish Parliament Speaker Mustafa Kalemli and his Greek counterpart
have held a meeting that added to the "air of spring" reigning over
Turco-Greek relations over the last few weeks. During their meeting
Kalemli and Kaklamanis agreed to set up a friedship committee between
the two parliaments. They also reached an accord on establishing
special working groups to cooperate in the struggle against drug
trafficking. Kalemli invited Kakalamanis to Ankara, and the Greek
representative accepted the invitation.
In a statement to the Greek Exusia newspaper, Turkish Foreign Ministry
Undersecretary Onur Oymen welcomed the proposal of Greek Foreign
Minister Theodoros Pangalos for the establishment of a joint committee
to take in hand Turco-Greek disagreements. Parliament Speaker Mustafa
Kalemli described the proposal as a "basis for bilateral dialogue".
Nevertheless, he said Turkey was against "pre-conditional dialogue."
Oymen also criticized the fact that Turkey had to learn from the press
the new proposals of Pangalos. /Hurriyet, Sabah/
[02] ISRAELI FOREIGN MINISTER IN ANKARA
Israeli Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister David Levy begins
today a two-day visit to Ankara. At 19:00 Levy will meet Prime
Minister Necmettin Erbakan. His programme also includes talks with
President Demirel, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tansu
Ciller and other high level Turkish officials.
[03] EFF PROPOSAL FOR IMF
Turkey is making preparations to submit to the IMF delegations
visiting Turkey an Extended Financial Funds (EFF) model, seen as the
most appropriate step within the framework of the medium range
stabilization programme envisaged by the coalition government. The
IMF delegation is not viewing negatively the proposal, that will be
discussed in detail during an IMF meeting later this month.

[04] FUNERAL CEREMONY FOR TURKES
The funeral ceremony to be held today for the late MHP leader
Alparslan Turkes is being given extended coverage by all the daily
nespapers. The coffin will be carried on shoulders all the way from
the hospital where he died to the final resting place of Turkes.
Ceremonies at the parliament will be held prior to the religious
service that is to take place at Kocatepe Mosque. Ten thousand people
have been assigned to ensure order during the ceremonies and funeral
marches.
[05] TURKEY HAS RIGHT TO EU MEMBERSHIP
Dutch Foreign Minister Hans Van Mierlo has given a strong answer to
European Union liberals who oppose Turkey's full membership in the EU.
In reply to liberal opposition, Van Mierlo said that Turkey had every
right to membership in the EU and voiced full support for Turkey's
efforts to secure membership. /Sabah/
[06] PKK CARRIES OFF NINE PEOPLE
PKK terrorists carried off nine of the people attending a dinner
celebrating the restoration of peace between two families in a village
near Diyarbakir. The terrorists struck while the meal was in progress
and kidnapped the local village head and eight other villagers.
Local security forces have begun operations to find the kidnappers and
save their captives. /Sabah/
[07] D-8 MEETING PLANNED FOR JUNE
Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan has already sent out invitations to
the heads of the member countries of the D-8 union of eight developing
Islamic countries. Government officials said yesterday that positive
replies had been received from all the countries invited except for
Egypt.
The meeting will be held in Istanbul on June 15, and preparations for
the meeting have already been started. /Cumhuriyet/
[08] EU LEADERS DISCUSSS ANKARA
French President Jacques Chirac and German Prime Minister Helmut Kohl
will meet in Bonn tomorrow to air their views on Turkey's membership
in the EU. These two European Union leaders have opposing views on
Turkey and its future relations with the EU. In fact, the future of
Turkey and the EU is one of the main problems dividing these two
leading EU countries. /Hurriyet/
[09] EU LETTER FROM TUSIAD
The Turkish Industralists' and Businessmen's Association (TUSIAD) sent
a letter to governments of the European Union (EU) requesting support
for Turkey's full EU membership. The letter was sent to all EU
institutions, governments and socio-economic institutions yesterday.
The letter said in part: "The EU should accept that Turkey is a
democratic and pluralist society, with wide experience in the market

[10] TURKEY-US-ISRAEL JOINT MILITARY MANOEUVRES
Washington has accepted Israeli Defence Minister Izak Mordechai's
proposal for joint military manoeuvres between Turkey, Israel and the
US. The Israeli Defence Ministry said that no official decision had
been taken yet and added that the manoeuvres would be to the benefit
of all three countries. /All papers/
[11] 5TH TURKISH ASSEMBLY IN ISTANBUL
The 5th Turkish State and Populations Friendship, Brotherhood and
Cooperation Assembly will be held between 11-13 April in Istanbul.
Within the framework of the assembly, using the Latin alphabet in
Turkish speaking republics, common currency and forming a Turkish
"common market" projects will be discussed. President Suleyman
Demirel, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller, ANAP
leader Mesut Yżlmaz and high level state representatives will attend

[12] PROMOTION OF TURKISH FIRMS ON INTERNET
The General Administration of Small and Middle Scale Industry
Development (KOSGEB) will promote Turkish firms to the world by means
of the internet and CDs in five languages. With this project
information about Turkish firms and establishments will be given in
Turkish, English, German, French and Italian./Cumhuriyet/
[13] AUTOMOBILE PRODUCTION UP
The Automobile Industrialists' Association (OSD) reported that
automobile production rose 6 % in March. 19,634 automobiles were
produced in March, 1996, whereas 18,524 were produced in March,

[14] SHIPOWNERS FROM 108 COUNTRIES TO MEET IN ISTANBUL
The General Council of the BIMCO (The Baltic and International
Maritime Council) will be held in Istanbul, when nearly 1,000
shipowners and shipbrokers from 108 countries, who hold 70 % of world
maritime transportation, will gather on 2-4 June and discuss problems
