[01] FOREIGN INVESTORS CONCERNED WITH TURKEY'S FUTURELondon hosted various conferences last week where Turkey's economic potential was one of the major areas of focus. Not only the government officials participating to the Euro-Mediterranean conference held in London on March 6-7, but also private sector representatives put special emphasize on investment opportunities in Turkey. The UK Department of Trade and Industry (DIT) also organized seminars on Turkey and examined trade and investment experience in Turkey./All papers/[02] COUNCIL OF EUROPE RAPPORTEURS TRAVEL TO DIYARBAKIRRapporteurs from the Council of Europe Parliamentarian Assembly traveled Thursday to Diyarbakır after having talks in Ankara for two days. Andres Barsony and Walter Schwimmer met with Onur Oymen, Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry, in the morning later with the officials of the pro-Kurdish People's Democracy Party; (HADEP)./Milliyet/[03] GUL: A MARKET OF 800 MILLION PEOPLE AWAITS USSpeaking at the opening of the latest D-8 meeting of Muslim countries in Antalya which included - Turkey, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria and Pakistan - which together comprise a market of more than 800 million people State Minister Abdullah Gul urged the countries to work together to benefit from this market. Stressing that the D-8 grouping was economic rather than political or religious, Abdullah Gul said that its basic purpose was dynamic cooperation, especially in the fields of industry, trade and tourism. The eight countries could present projects in these fields to the Antalya meeting for evaluation and those deemed feasible would be put into effect./Cumhuriyet/[04] CILLER TO FINLANDForeign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Tansu Ciller will go to Finland today in order to ask for support for Turkey's full membership in the European Union (EU). Ciller will meet with Finnish Foreign Minister Ptarar Halonen and will be received by President Martti Ahtisaari. Tansu Ciller will return home tomorrow./Hurriyet/Sabah_[05] BELGIAN COMPANIES INTERESTED IN PRIVATIZATIONBelgian telecommunications investors are willing to participate in the bidding for the privatization of Turkish cable TV. The Gullam Group, one of the Belgian leaders in telecommunications, is planning to set up a consortium with Turkish companies in this area. The Belgian delegation, headed by Belgian Crown Prince Philippe and Deputy Prime Minister and Finance and Foreign Trade Minister Philippe Maystadt, has has more than 400 business meetings in Ankara and Istanbul, along with contacts with Turkish top level government representatives/Cumhuriyet/[06] TURKEY WARNS ISRAEL AGAIN ABOUT ITS SETTLEMENT POLICYAt the U.N. General Assembly meeting on Thursday Turkey once again asked Israel to cancel its decision to establish new settlements in East Jerusalem, the Anatolia news agency reported. Turkey's permanent representative to the U.N., Huseyin Celem, said at the General Assembly meeting that while a peaceful solution was very close, Israel's decision would harm the peace process.[07] CABINET AGREES TO MGK CONCERNSThe government discussed on Thursday the steps sought by the National Security Council (MGK) against fundamentalist movements, and decided to "formulate measures in line with the MGK decisions. At the end of the Cabinet meeting, which lasted nearly four hours, a government spokesman announced that the government was strictly determined to fight the threat of "religious extremism"./Cumhuriyet/[08] PRAISE FOR ATATURK FROM ALBRIGHTDuring a meeting arranged with US First Lady Hillary Clinton to celebrate World Women's Day, US State Secretary Madeleine Albright was full of praise for Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish Republic.Albright noted that Ataturk had been a defender of women's rights and drew attention to his thoughts on educating everyone including women. Ataturk was keen to bring all of Turkey into the modern world and that included women too. /Milliyet/ [09] MORE SUPPORT FOR ANKARAOfficials in the US State Department have declared themselves in favour of more support for Ankara, saying that Ankara needs the wherewithal for democratization, and for beefing up security in the region.Members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee have again noted the importance of Turkey as a valued NATO ally, and agreed that the US supports economic development in Turkey in line with democratic growth. /Milliyet/ [10] KALEMLI MEETS WITH NAZARBAYEVTurkish Parliament Speaker Mustafa Kalemli has stated that closer ties to be established between the parliaments of Turkey and Kazakhstan will bring the two nations closer together. Yesterday, Kalemli and his accompanying parliamentary delegation arrived in Kazakhstan, the second leg of his visit to the Central Asian Republics. Kalemli was welcomed by Senate Speaker Omurbek Baygeldi at Almati Airport. He later visited the Parliament and met with Baygeldi. Kalemli also spoke with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev yesterday. /Sabah/[11] TURKISH PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION'S MESSAGE TO EUROPEThe Turkish Parliamentary delegation has expressed the view that the European Union (EU) has not kept its word in regard to the financial aid that was to be extended to Turkey. The delegation stated that Turkey may withdraw from the Euro-Med funding organization which contributes to cooperation between Mediterranean countries in Europe.The Turkish Parliamentary delegation which has established various contacts in the European Parliament, has criticized the stand taken by Europe and relayed the message that should this negative attitude continue Turkey may withdraw from Euro-Med. Turkey has in the past said that the country could withdraw from the Customs Union (CU) should the Christian Democrats adopt a stand against Turkey's membership in the EU. In an address yesterday, Hasan Denizkurdu said that although Turkey was the third closest country to the EU and a member of the CU, withdrawal from the EU was still possible. /Hurriyet/ [12] SIMITIS: "TURKEY NOT TO BE EXCLUDED"Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis said that the EU should not use Greece as an excuse for taking a stand against Turkey. "Greece is not against developing Turco-EU relations provided the pre-conditions are accepted" he added. In an interview with Greek national TV, Simitis gave out positive messages in regard to Turkey. He put forward the view that it was other countries that put obstacles in Turkey's path. He said that Greece would benefit the most from developed Turco-EU relations. /Milliyet/[13] GIL ROBLES: "MAKE YOUR CHOICE"Speaker of the European Parliament, Jose Maria Gil Robles, said that Turkey was at the crossroads and it was not certain in which direction the country will go. "Turkey must make a definite choice between Spain and Iran" he added.He emphasized that it was not only Muslims who were fundamentalist, Christians too could be included in this group and could turn their backs on European civilization. /Milliyet/ [14] BORDER VIOLATIONS BY IRANThe governors of the Agri and Van have submitted a report on security problems along the Turco-Iraqi border to the Joint Security Commission set up to deal with such issues. According to the report, Iranian soldiers often violate the Turkish border, and there were disagreements over the border line between border markers 39 and 40. /Cumhuriyet/[15] EFES PILSEN DEFEATS ISRAELI MACCABITurkish basketball fans celebrated yesterday as the Efes Pilsen basketball team swept aside the challenge of the Israeli Maccabi team to reach the quarter finals in the European league.
