Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this
morning
[01] IRAQ, TURKEY TAKE POSITIVE STEP TO NORMALIZE ECONOMIC RELATIONS
Turkey-Iraq Joint Economic Commission meetings will begin again on
Wednesday after a 5-year hiatus. This is considered to be another
positive step in the normalization of economic relations between the
two countries. Iraqi Oil Minister Amir Muhammed Rasheed, who visited
Turkey in the spring, and Turkish State Minister Cemil Tunc will head
the delegations for four days of meetings at the end of which the
parties will sign a cooperation protocol. /All papers/
[02] UN RENEWS UNFICYP MANDATE FOR 6 MONTHS
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) voted on Monday to extend
the mandate of the UNFICYP peace-keeping force (United Nations Force
in Cyprus) until June 30, 1997. The force, consisting of 1,200
multinational troops, was formed in 1964. UNSC Resolution No: 1092
to extend the mandate was adopted unanimously. /All papers/
[03] INCENTIVE PACKAGE FOR EASTERN AND SOUTHEASTERN ANATOLIA
Investments in the eastern and southeastern Anatolia regions will be
accelerated with incentives. A decision of the Council of Ministers
regarding this issue was published in the Official Gazette today.

[04] TURKEY SENDS A NOTE TO GREECE
Turkey has given a note to Athens regarding the question of finding
the murderers of four Turkish diplomats killed in terrorist attacks in
Greece. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Omer Akbel said in a
written statement that judicial investigations initiated regarding
terrorist attacks carried out against Turkish diplomats since 1980 to
date should be concluded as soon as possible. Akbel added that a note
on the matter had been given to Greece. /Cumhuriyet/
[05] GREEK POLICE ATTACK TURKISH VILLAGE IN WESTERN THRACE
Greek police raided a mosque under construction in Kimmeria, Western
Thrace, arresting 16 Turkish workers and beating a Turkish villager
with truncheons, the Anatolia news agency reported. Kimmeria village
head Huseyin Bandak and village imam Ahmet Idris were taken into
custody on spurious charges. The 16 workers were later released by
the court to be tried on January 3, 1997.
The Greek police claimed that the construction permit for the mosque
was not valid. Villager Emin Recep, who said the raid was against the
law, was beaten up by the police for "opposing official authorities".
Recep was taken to the Iskece (Xanthi) Hospital after the incident.
[06] FRANCE OPENS A SOFT LOAN TO TURKEY
France opened a soft loan of 87 million francs to Turkey for use in
two infrastructure projects, the French Embassy in Turkey said
yesterday. A statement said the two countries signed a loan agreement
in Paris on December 20. The loan, to be used for a waste water
project in Izmir and a study centre for a university in Istanbul, has
a 30-year maturity with a 10-year grace period and an annual interest
rate of 0.6 %. The embassy said France had opened credit lines to
Turkey worth about $1 billion during the past 10 years. /All papers/
[07] TURKISH SOLDIER KILLED IN GRENADE ACCIDENT
A Turkish soldier was killed yesterday when a grenade accidentally
exploded in his hand in southeast Turkey, security officials said.
The soldier, a non-commissioned officer, was together with two
civilians in a car belonging to the mayor of the town of Balveren in
Sirnak province where the accident took place. The two civilians,
relatives of the mayor, were wounded in the explosion. /All papers/
[08] INONU COMMEMORATED WITH CEREMONIES
The second president of the Turkish Republic, Ismet Inonu, is being
commemorated with ceremonies in the 23rd anniversary of his death. A
meeting was held yesterday by the Turkish Education Association
founded by Ismet Inonu. /Cumhuriyet/
[09] SUCCESS OF TURKISH DOCTOR
In the January issue of the "Chicago" magazine, there is a list of
"Doctors at the top in Chicago" which includes Prof.Ergun Onal, who is
the Head of the Chest Diseases and Intensive Care Department. Onal
takes place in the first 500 people among 20,000 doctors.
