Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning
[01] AZIZ VISITS ANKARA
Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz ended a brief visit to
Turkey seeking Turkey's support for the finalization of Baghdad's
ill-starred oil-for-food deal with the United Nations. Aziz met
with Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan and Foreign Minister Tansu
Ciller who said that Turkey was actively lobbying for the
implementation of UN Resolution 986 for limited Iraqi oil sales.
While in Ankara, Aziz repeated Iraqi objections to a Turkey-based
Western air force enforcing a no-fly zone in northern Iraq. /All

[02] THREE PKK MEMBERS KILLED
During an 'Autumn Operation' initiated two days ago in Tunceli,
three members of the PKK terrorist organization were killed and
three members of the security forces were wounded. /Cumhuriyet/
[03] HUGE GREEK DEFENCE PROJECT
The Greek government has decided to strengthen its army with
another massive project. The Greek Foreign Affairs and Defence
Council convened in Athens yesterday morning. Greek Prime
Minister Kostas Simitis later disclosed the decisions taken
during the council meeting. Simitis stated that Greece would
spend 4 trillion Drahmi (nearly $16 billion) for the defence of
the country. Political observers have pointed out that Greece has
allocated such a huge amount for the first time in its history.

[04] TURKEY WELL REPRESENTED AT LONDON TOURISM FAIR
The Olympia Exhibition Center in London on Tuesday opened with an
annual international tourism fair in which Turkey is represented
by 11 companies. The Turkish tourism industry is targeting the
British market not only for "sun and sea" tourist packages but
also for winter and weekend tourism. Britain is ranked third in
terms of the number of tourists visiting Turkey. Last year
800,000 Britons visited Turkey and this number is expected to
increase this coming tourism year. /All papers/
[05] EGYPT PLANS TO EXPORT GAS TO TURKEY
The Egyptian Oil Ministry said on Wednesday that the Italian
energy company ENI had agreed to take part in a project to export
Egyptian gas to Turkey. Egypt also wanted the US company Amoco to
participate in the project. The statement did not say whether the
exports would be by pipeline or by tanker. /All papers/
[06] TURKISH AVIATION LEAGUE TO BUILD PLANES
The Turkish Aviation League (THK) will begin to produce planes
for applying agricultural insecticide and extinguishing fires by
the next year. THK Chairman Prof.Atilla Tacoy, who met with
President Suleyman Demirel two days ago, said: "Everything is
almost finished. We will realize direct production". Noting that
they had made an agreement with a foreign company and aim to
produce 10-15 planes annually at the first stage, Tacoy pointed
out that Turkey needs at least 150 planes for these and similar

[07] AWARD FOR JOURNALIST ONAL
The International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) has decided
that one of the "Press Courage Awards" will be given to Turkish
journalist Ayse Onal this year. According to a statement made by
the Foundation, the award ceremony will be held in New York on 19
November. It is reported that this year in addition to Ayse Onal,
Saide Ramzan, a journalist on the "El Alam el Yevm" newspaper
published in Egypt, and Lucy Sichone, a journalist representing
"The Post" newspaper published in Zambia will also be awarded.
