TUESDAY JUNE 25, 1996
Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning
[01] AUSTRIAN PRESIDENT VISITS TURKEY
Austrian President Thomas Klestil arrived in Ankara yesterday for
an official visit as the guest of President Suleyman Demirel.
Austrian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Wolfgang
Schussel and Transport Minister Rudolf Scholten accompanied
Klestil. Delivering an address to the official welcoming ceremony
at the Presidential Palace in Cankaya, President Demirel pointed
out that this was the first visit at this level from Austria to
Turkey. Following the welcoming ceremony, Demirel and Klestil
held a joint press conference. Demirel gave a banquet in
Klestil's honour at the Cankaya Palace yesterday.
Demirel said the talks during Klestil's visit would concentrate
on ways to enhance bilateral ties as well as international issues
of close interest to the two countries. President Klestil in his
address at the ceremony underlined the importance of Turkey and
Austria as two strategically placed countries. He added his hope
that his visit would become the symbol of the close ties the two
countries have had over the centuries.
Demirel pointed out that Turkey was the only Muslim and
democratic country in its region. Klestil, for his part, called
upon countries to cooperate against terrorism. Klestil noted that
claims regarding the Kurdish Parliament-in-exile in Austria were
not true. Thanking Austria for its contributions to Turkey's
entry into the customs union, Demirel also expressed his thanks
for Austria's contributions to the Birecik and Karkamis Dam
constructions. After completing his contacts in Ankara, Klestil
will go to Izmir today and on Wednesday he will go to Istanbul,
where Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz will give a luncheon in
Klestil's honour. Klestil will leave Turkey the same day.

[02] TURKEY-EU TIES MOVING AHEAD
With the likelihood that the pro-Islam Welfare Party will not
come to power in Turkey, ties with the European Union (EU) have
started to move along faster. Within the framework of improved
relations, the Greek veto against EU financial aid to Turkey
looks as though it will be resolved as quickly as possible. The
Europeans too, are showing confidence in Prime Minister Mesut
Yilmaz, and this has led EU members to say that more major
decisions involving Turkey will be taken soon. /Hurriyet/
[03] "AMNESTY SUPPORTS TERROR"
In a statement yesterday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry claimed
that the Amnesty International (AI) supported terrorism in its
annual reports on terrorism. The Foreign Ministry was
particularly concerned about the AI report on Turkey and the
expressions used there by the AI, which suggest that the
Organization support terrorist actions recognized as being
outside the legal international interpretation of what
constitutes terrorism. /Cumhuriyet/
[04] FOREIGN MINISTER TO REPRESENT TURKEY AT PAPANDREOU FUNERAL
Turkey will probably be represented at Wednesday's funeral of
former Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou by Foreign
Minister Emre Gonensay. President Suleyman Demirel, Prime
Minister Mesut Yilmaz and Foreign Minister Emre Gonensay sent
their condolences to their Greek counterparts on Sunday, shortly
after hearing of the death of the former Socialist prime
minister. /All papers/

Parliamentary Commission will meet in Ankara today. Various EU
political groups, members of the European Council and other top
level oficials will participate in the meeting.

[06] MACEDONIAN PRESIDENT TO VISIT TURKEY
Macedonian President Kiro Gligorov will visit Turkey as the guest
of President Suleyman Demirel between June 27-30. Foreign

that Ljube Trepski, Deputy Prime Minister and Bekir Juta, Economy
Minister, will accompany Gligorov on the visit. Akbel pointed out
that the two delegations will concentrate on regional and
international issues as well as the prospects of developing
bilateral commercial and economic relations. /Cumhuriyet/

Chief of General Staff. Gen.Ismail Hakki Karadayi has gone to
Baku as the official guest of Gen.Sefer Abiyev, Azerbaijani
Defence Minister. Gen.Karadayi said at Baku Bine Airport that the
friendship between Azerbaijan and Turkey had become closer and
added: "We want continuous peace, confidence and stability in the
region. We are determined to do everything we can to maintain

[08] MORE VIOLENCE AGAINST TURKS IN GERMANY
Arsonists firebombed a Turkish grocery store in Kempten, Germany
on Monday, causing material damage. German police officers said
that two unknown assailants broke the windows of the shop and
attempted to torch the building. The fire was put out shortly
after it had started. No one was hurt in the attack. The attack
was the first for a long time, according to police.//
[09] TURKEY SEES ARAB SUMMIT RESULT BALANCED AND REASONABLE
Turkish Foreign Ministry Spokesman Omer Akbel said that the
results of the Cairo Arab summit were balanced and reasonable and
that the most important point for Turkey was that all the
participators in the summit had reaffirmed their attachment to
the peace process. Akbel, in the weekly press conference
yesterday, said that Arab countries had stated that a just and
lasting peace was the most valid security assurance for the
region. Turkey shares this view and believes that Israel will
also stick to the peace process, Akbel said. "The second point
that concerns Turkey directly about the decisions of the Arab
summit is the fact that in the Cairo decisions Arab countries
have expressed their wish to further develop the already existing
traditional ties and common interest between Turkey and Arab
countries. "We welcome this point" Akbel said.
"Participating states have undertaken once again to develop
relations on the basis of certain universal principles such as
independence, territorial integrity, regional security and
non-interference in domestic affairs. They also condemn
terrorism. We would expect that the same principles would apply
not only in intra-Arab relations but also in bilateral relations
between Arab countries and non-Arab neighbours. In this context
we will carefully follow how Syria, which has up to now been
supporting PKK terrorism, will follow its obligations under the
undertaking" Akbel added. /Cumhuriyet/
