Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this
morning
[01] TURKEY, CROATIA AND BOSNIA TO HOLD TRIPARTITE TALKS
The foreign ministers from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Turkey
will come together today to assess developments in the Balkans.
The meeting, which will be hosted by Turkish Foreign Minister
Emre Gonensay, is part of the periodic consultations between the
two countries but gains importance by being the first such
meeting since the Dayton peace accord. The last tripartite
meeting was last year, in the Bosnian city of Zenica. Gonensay,
along with his Bosnian counterpart Yadranko Prlic and Croat
Foreign Minister Mate Granic, are expected to discuss how to
overcome the bottlenecks in the Bosnian-Croat deferation. Their
final statement will express support for the federation. The
sides will also express the need for the reconstruction of
Bosnia, and the need to create a federation army. After their
tripartite meeting, the ministers will be received by Prime
Minister Mesut Yilmaz. /Cumhuriyet/
[02] FRANCE'96 FAIR OPENS IN ISTANBUL
The French Industry and Trade Fair, France'96 was opened by
President Suleyman Demirel on Friday at the TUYAP Fair Centre in
Istanbul. At the opening, Demirel emphasized the friendship
between Turkey and France which went more deeply than just
between governments; it extended to the people as well. Demirel
thanked France for the assistance it had provided in helping
Turkey get into the customs union and declared that next on the
list was entrance into the EU itself. Demirel pointed out that
Turkey was in the position of being a bridge in the area with
experienced businessmen who had worked abroad. Given its dynamic
population, the country's balance of trade had reached a $60
billion surplus and in the next five years it should achieve
double that amount. With an economy worth $300 billion Turkey
ranked 19th out of 184 countries in the world. Turkey has
extended an invitation to French President Jacques Chirac to
visit Turkey on October 1.
French Foreign Trade and Finance Minister Yves Galland in his
speech pointed to Turkey's special character as a growing
regional country, the growing reputation of the country's
companies and the possibilities for entering into joint
agreements. He drew attention to the fact that many French firms
are participating in the fair, a positive sign is the fact that
France is the leading foreign investor in Turkey. Following the
opening of the fair, Demirel and Minister Galland toured the
area. France'96, which continues through until May 28, is
expected to draw wide interest and up to 20,000 people are
expected to attend. More than 200 companies from 20 sectors are
exhibiting their wares. In addition to the fair itself,
professional meetings and seminars are being held. /All papers/
[03] DENKTAS TO MEET WITH GHALI ON JUNE 11
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas
has confirmed news reports that he will meet UN Secretary-General
Boutros Boutros-Ghali on June 11. Regarding the agenda of the
meeting, Denktas said: "We are for the continuation of the
secretary-general's Mission of good offices. We are wary of the
efforts of some countries to carry the negotiations into other
channels, ostensibly to help the secretary-general. "Yet the same
circles who say they want to help the secretary-general, are
ingoring his views regarding the contiunation of the Treaties of
Guarantees and Alliance and are producing formulas which would
give the Greek Cypriot side the opportunity to destroy these
treaties which are vital for us" Denktas added. "I want to convey
those views and concerns to the secretary-general". /All papers/
[04] ANKARA CONCERN OVER CAUCASIA
Ankara is concerned about Moscow's efforts to increase Russian
influence in the region. The Russian Federation is preparing to
hold a "Caucasia Conference" in Moscow and Ankara is concerned
about where Turkey will stand as areas of influence shift. This
especially so as Chechen leader Selimhan Yandarbiyev will
apparently soon go to Moscow for talks.
There is yet another thought that Iran will join in the struggle
for more influence in the region by holding its own top level
central Asian summit. Observers point out that in other words,
Turkey seems to be being pushed out of regional developments.

[05] CYPRUS ON EC AGENDA
Parliamentarians in the European Council (EC) will be meeting
today, and one of the most important matters on the agenda will
be Cyprus. British parliamentarian Lord Finsberg will present a
new "Cyprus report" and EC members will take in hand issues
related to the status of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
(TRNC).
Something else that will interest Turkey is the proposal that the
EC should initiate moves to set up a new human rights watch dog
committee. Turkey will be among the first few countries that the
EC will want to observe as to progress being made in the area of

[06] AUDITING GIANTS MEET IN TURKEY
The European managers of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu International
(DTTI), one of the world's biggest auditing companies, met last
week in Istanbul for their regular annual meeting held each year
in a different country. DTTI Turkey Board of Directors Chairman,
Levent Yaveroglu, said that during the last few years Turkish
companies have managed to catch up with world standards in
auditing. Yaveroglu noted that the meeting, organized after the
establishment of customs union between Turkey and the European
Union, played an important role regarding the promotion of Turkey
and the Turkish economy among the partners of the multinational
companies operating in Europe. "References about Turkey given by
DTTI specialists all over the world will accelerate the flow of
foreign capital to Turkey," Yaveroglu pointed out.
After the three-day meeting, more than half of the 200 managers
who came to Istanbul for the meeting, made reservations planning
to spend their summer holiday in Turkey together with their

[07] REGULAR FLIGHTS TO HAVANA ESTABLISHED
Aiming to promote bilateral economic and commercial relations,
Turkey and Cuba have agreed to establish regular flights between
each other. A Turco-Cubanian air-transportation agreement signed
in July 1993, has been ratified by the Council of Ministers and
published in the Official Gazzette. According to the agreement,
both countries have given each other the right of transit passage
through each other's air space. Provisions regulating the
transportation of passangers, cargo and mail have also been
included in the agreement. /Cumhuriyet/
