    [01] PRESIDENT DEMIREL CALLS FOR PEACE IN THE WORLD

    President Suleyman Demirel, who went to New York for the 50th anniversary of the UN, cautioned that disappointments with the UN, as well as expectations from the organization, were on the increase. Demirel exhorted the UN to "revisit the ideals enshrined in its Charter" and take them up with "new vigor and vision in order to set the course of the organization for the coming century". Demirel ended his speech by quoting Turkish poet Yunus Emre:

    "Come let us get to know each other And make it easier for all of us. Let us love and be loved, For this world is no one's to own forever".

    In his speech yesterday, Demirel focused on the need for preventive diplomacy, maintaining that this should be a priority on the UN agenda, along with a determined struggle against any form of aggression, particularly terrorism. He also called for a "more democratic and more responsible" Security Council. Demirel said: "If we want to succeed, all nations in the world must continue to unite their powers for the maintenance of peace and security, for the development of democracy and social improvement within more freedom, justice, respect in human rights and law". Demirel also called all heads of states and governments to attend the Habitat II Conference to be held in Istanbul next year.

    After his five-minute address to the General Assembly, Demirel met with the presidents of Kazakhstan and Finland, the second of whom is the chairman of the Minsk group, which aims to bring a solution to the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. In the evening, before a dinner given by US President Bill Clinton, Demirel attended a four-cornered summit between the Turkish, Bulgarian, Albanian and Macedonian presidents. The "West-East highway" issue was taken up at the summit.

    Demirel will meet with Hans van Den Broek, the EU Commissioner for external relations, Azeri President Haydar Aliyev and Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosian today. Demirel will also host a tripartite summit with the presidents of Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Onur Oymen, Deputy Undersecretaries Inal Batu, Omer Aktac and Ayhan Kamer accompanied Demirel.

    Meanwhile, thousands of people from the Turkish and Greek sides attended the celebrations organized at the Ledra Palace Hotel in Nicosia for the 50th anniversary of the UN. /Cumhuriyet-Milliyet/

    [02] COALITION PROTOCOL IS READY

    Preparations for the 52nd coalition government have been completed. Today, True Path Party (DYP) leader Tansu Ciller and Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal will hold a joint press conference to announce the protocol. The draft Electoral Law will also be presented to the Turkish Grand National Assebly by the two parties. /Hurriyet-Milliyet/

    [03] TURKISH JOURNALISTS RELEASED

    Munire Acim of daily Hurriyet, and her colleague Ali Kocak of the Anatolia news agency, were among 20 prisoners exchanged by the Bosnian government and its Serb foes on Saturday. The Turks had been seized at a checkpoint in a suburb of the capital on October 7. "They took me to Ilidza and questioned me for nine hours" Acim told the state-owned TRT television on Saturday night. "They told me I would be hanged with a silk rope". Acim said that she and Kocak had been travelling with a French UN convoy when they entered Serb-held territory. When they were stopped by Serb troops near Ilidza, about 15 km north of Sarajevo, the peacekeepers abandoned them, she said.

    [04] IRAQI DEPUTY FM IN ANKARA

    Iraqi Deputy Foreign Minister Saad El-Faissal starts today his talks with Turkish officials with a full agenda of "all aspects of bilateral relations and regional issues". El-Faissal is expected to appeal to the Turkish side for its support in lifting the UN-imposed embargo against Iraq, which has been maintained since 1990. Turkey, for its part, is one of the states most affected by the embargo. Prime Minister Tansu Ciller has put Turkey's losses at around $20 billion. The Iraqi Deputy FM is expected to repeat the Iraqi objection to the presence of Operation Provide Comfort. The Turkish side maintains that whether Turkey will extend the mandate of the force is in the hands of the Turkish Parliament. El-Faisssal will also ask Turkey to stop its dialogue with the northern Iraqi Kurdish leaders, saying "they are no different from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). While in Turkey, El-Faissal will meet with his Turkish counterpart Onur Oymen. He will also be received by Foreign Minister Coskun Kirca. /Cumhuriyet/

    [05] TURKSAT-1C SATELLITE TO BE LAUNCHED IN 1996

    The telecommunications satellite, TURKSAT-1C, will be sent into space in June 1996. Technical problems in the production of TURKSAT-1C had prevented an earlier launch. The manufacturing firm therefore reconstructed TURKSAT-1C without any additional charge. The 1,745 kilogram satellite, will be launched from French Guiana, South America. All the satellite channels will be directed toward Turkey and 16 of them will be monitored from this country. Its technical capabilities will permit service to a wide range of customers and to a wider region. Huge antennae will no longer be required, as the astellite will enable smaller antennae to receive TV and radio stations throughout Turkey, Central Europe and Central Asia. Transmission problems created by the mountains of eastern Anatolia will no longer be a factor. Communication by telephone, telex, and fax will be greatly facilitated. This will aid security forces. Reservations and cancellations will be made much more rapidly due to the satellite's fast input network. /Sabah/

    [06] FOREIGN BUSINESSMEN IN TURKEY

    350 businessmen members of the Chief Executive Organization (CEO) gathered in Istanbul for the organization's annual meeting that started on October 22 and will last one week. CEO aims to improve the effectiveness of its members by assisting them in following the latest business developments in the world and providing them with opportunities for exchange of views. Each meeting becomes a forum for promoting the host country with its history, economy, culture and social life. Observers note that the fact that such a platform is organized in the period of Turkey's entry to the customs union plays an important role. /Sabah/

    [07] AMERICAN COMPANIES DISCOVER TURKEY

    The number of American companies that engage in joint investments with Turkish firms gradually increases. The Programme for Development of Turco-American Joint Investments, initiated by the Union of Chambers with the aim of providing a forum for the meeting of Turkish and American businessmen, has so far provided assistance to 350 small and medium-size American companies. /Sabah/

    [08] TURKEY AN IMPORTANT TRADING PARTNER FOR GERMANY

    Reiner Mockhelmann, Commercial Attache of the German Embassy said that Turkey was one of Germany's leading trade partner and this was confirmed by the fact that cooperation between the two countries had increased of late. He said Germany supported Turkey's entrance to the customs union and membership to the European Union (EU).

    Turkey's importance will greatly increase after the customs union. There are presently some 460 German firms working in partnership with Turkish concerns particularly in the automotive, electronic and chemical fields.

    Mockhelmann said that the member of German tourists coming to Turkey this year had increased by 45 % and he believed the number would reach 1.5 million by the end of the year.

    There are presently 20,000 types of Turkish products being marketted in Germany. The German Bosch firm has made an investment in Turkey and the German automotive giant MAN has increased its shares in the country and Mercedes-Benz has inaugrated its new installations in Turkey. /Sabah/

    [09] BARZANI CONFESSES TO HAVING AIDED THE PKK

    Leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Mesut Barzani confessed to having aided the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the 1980s. He said that the PKK is now trying to annihilate his party. Barzani added that the losses of the PKK were great and he has issued a call to the terrorist organization to surrender. /Sabah/

    [10] TURKEY APPLIES TO WTO TO HOST 12TH MEETING

    Officials from the Tourism Ministry said on Friday that Turkey has applied to host the 12th meeting of the World's Tourism Organization (WTO) in 1997. Officials said that they are informing the organization on the "Silk Road Project", which was the ministry's project, in collaboration with the state-run Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT), for the promotion of Turkish history and culture.
