[01] PRIME MINISTER MARJANOVIC RECEIVES DELEGATION OF THE STUDENTS ALLIANCE
Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia Mirko Marjanovic, received
yesterday on the occasion of April 4th, Day of Students of Belgrade, the
delegation of the Students' Alliance of Belgrade. While congratulating
students their holiday, which is having a long tradition at the Belgrade
University, Prime Minister especially underlined that over the past three
years the Government of the Republic of Serbia has allocated over 200
million dinars for the improvement of conditions for the studies and
standard of living, so that today in over 80 percent of the accommodation
buildings in which students are housed, has the level of a B category
hotel. Marjanovic also said that the Government in this academic year has
granted 16,000 grants, 1,300 scholarships and over another 600 scholarships
for specially talented students. Government will continue with the policy
of further improvement of the quality of work and life of students, but at
the same time it will insist on the improvement of results during the
studies.

[02] WHY SILENCE ABOUT THE AGGRESSION OF THE CROAT ARMY ON BOSNIA-
HERZEGOVINA?
The former commander of the Muslim Army Sefer Halilovic stated yesterday
that he does not understand why the documents are still being concealed
about the aggression of the regular army of the Republic of Croatia on
Bosnia-Herzegovina. In his statement for the independent Sarajevo
electronic media, he added that he does not understand why it is concealed
from the public what were the intentions of the aggression and secession of
the Croat Community of Herzeg-Bosnia. Halilovic recalled that the commander
of the Croat Defense Council Ante Gotovina in early April 1992 issued an
order according to which the units of the Croat Defense Council are the
only legal units in Herzeg-Bosnia, and that the Muslim units and illegal
and para-military. Halilovic was dismissed from the post of the commander
by the end of 1993 because he was supporting the stand that frontiers and
territorial size of 33 percent would be the area for which the Muslim army
is to fight, and not for the entire territory of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

[03] ATTACKS ON SERBS IN ZAGREB AND KOSTAJNICA
During the past two days in Croatia two serious incidents have occurred in
which citizens of Serbian nationality were attacked. On Tuesday evening in
the very center of Zagreb, in front of the railway station, a group of the
young members of the Serbian cultural society "Prosvjeta" was attacked
while they were preparing to board the bus on route to Prague. The bus was
demolished, two young men were seriously injured and are in the hospital,
while the Zagreb mass media did not report this with a single word.
President of the Alliance of Serbian Organizations in Zagreb, Dr. Milorad
Pupovac is stating that the attack on the members of the "Prosvjeta"
society occurred after the Croat Television broadcasted the program
"Motrista" creating a false picture about the work of this society and
negative attitude towards it. On the following day after this incident,
Milorad Pupovac with associates visited several towns in Banija and at the
end of his visit in Kostajnica, was attacked with eggs. "The Alliance of
Serbian Organizations is most strongly condemning the attempts for the
incidents to spread into the other parts of Croatia and in the form of
revanchism to be aimed against Serbian organizations, and exactly those
which are through their activities doing their maximum for the peaceful
reintegration of Eastern Slavonia", stated Pupovac.

[04] NO CONDITIONS FOR THE ELECTIONS
President of the Srem and Baranja Region Goran Hadzic requested from the
United Nations to postpone the elections in Eastern Slavonia for the County
Chamber of the Sabor (Parliament), which are scheduled to take place, like
in the entire Croatia, on April 13, 1997. According to the reports by the
Croat Radio Television, Hadzic in his letter to the UN Secretary General
Koffee Annan stated that all conditions have not been fulfilled for the
elections in the Region. Hadzic recalls that there is no political decision
for the participation of the Serbian people at the elections in the Region
and adds that the decision in this respect will be passed by its assembly
at the end of this week.

[05] "SERBIAN KNIGHTHOOD" DECORATIONS AWARDED
Council of the World Serbian Community, for whose president the academician
Dejan Medakovic was elected yesterday, and for vice-presidents the writer
Antonije Isakovic and mayor of Vukovar Miroslav Keravice, announced that
among eighty candidates seven were selected for the award "Serbian Knight"
decoration for the last year. This decoration was introduced five years ago
as an instigation and gratitude to those who have "performed outstanding
deeds for the well being of the Serbia people". Decoration was this time
awarded to the American Major Richard Felmann, who was the pilot during
World War Two and had crushed down in Serbia and who "for over 50 years now
is doing everything humanly possible to thank Serbian people for his
salvation". "The Knight" for the year 1996 was also awarded to Nadezda
Radovic from Austria ("who is on regular basis aiding both in money and in
other ways 20 war orphans from the Republic of Srpska"), Radisav Zivaljevic
from Austria ("for collecting humanitarian aid throughout Austria, in which
work he had incorporated many Austrian citizens and institutions"), and
Nikola Kusovac of Belgrade ("the organizer of salvation of the Serbian
national treasure from the war thorn areas in Croatia"). The high
decoration was also awarded to Bratislava Beba Bjelopetrovic from the
United States, who has brought to her old home country the aid for wounded
and refugees in the value of several hundred thousands US dollars, Snezana
Vitorovic from Canada, one of the founding members of the Association of
Serbian Women in Toronto, for "disseminating the truth about the Serbian
question in the Canadian public". Vukica Popovic from Zrenjanin deserved
the award because of engaging in preservation of cultural treasure of Serbs
in Romania and "contribution to the preservation of records of our presence
in these areas". While stating at the press conference that "the status of
Serbs in Croatia is a priority task this year for the World Serbian
Community", Dr. Misa Milosevic, secretary general of the Community, said
that in June this year a discussion on this topic will be organized in the
Institute of Serbian People in Sremski Karlovci.

[06] DECISION WILL BE PASSED BY THE ASSEMBLY
"This Region should be the core of preservation of Serbian interests in
Croatia. We shall be the picture of what is happening to Serbs in Croatia
further on", stated at the promotional press conference in Vukovar
president of the Independent Democratic Serbian Party Dr. Vojislav
Stanimirovic. He underlined that the forthcoming elections, if the regional
assembly and the assembly of the party shall pass the decision to join the
elections, for Serbian national corpus will mean "further political
struggle", but "exclusively with political means". Stanimirovic pointed out
that it is still hard to say whether Serbs from this Region with their
party will appear at the elections, because there are many irregularities
and problems with the issue of Croat documents and compiling of the voting
lists. "People is expecting guarantees from the Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia and the Republic of Croatia on the dual citizenship, soft
frontiers, de-militarization and monitoring", emphasized Stanimirovic.

[07] SINCERE FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN SERBS AND JEWS
"In Israel there is a warm and friendly feeling towards Serbs who are one
of the few European people towards whom such feelings are nurtured in the
Jewish state", said the newly appointed Ambassador of Israel in the Federal
Republic of Yugoslavia, H.E. David Sason, in his interview for the Novi Sad
newspaper "Nedeljni dnevnik". He added that Serbs are also having very warm
feelings towards Jews and underlined: "The very fact that it is a feeling
of friendship between Serbs and Jews as entire peoples is giving a much
greater dimension to these relations". Ambassador Sason recalled that in
Israel very little was known about Yugoslavia and the life of the local
Jewish community here. "Like the rest of the world, we in Israel were
learning about Yugoslavia and these areas on the basis of the broadcasts of
the TV networks like the CNN", said Sason and underlined that people in
Israel could not believe when he started reporting from Belgrade. "Just
because of that other image of Yugoslavia, from the one presented by the
electronic media, my mission is not only a diplomatic one but a moral one
as well", said Ambassador Sason. While commenting on the media demonization
of Serbs, in which also certain Jewish intellectuals in the world were
taking part, as for example Henry Levy who had openly supported
fundamentalist Alija Izetbegovic, Sason pointed out that it is important
that Israel, when Serbs are concerned, publicly pronounced its stands at
the moments which were the most critical for the Serbia people.

[08] NEW DAILY IN THE ALBANIAN LANGUAGE
In Prishtina, a new daily newspaper has appeared in the Albanian language
"Koha ditore". It is said that this is "an independent informative daily"
whose publisher is Veton Suroi who had started several years ago the weekly
"Koha". After the newspaper "Bujku" this is the second daily newspaper in
the Albanian language in Kosovo and Metohija. In the Albanian language in
Prishtina there is a free and devoid of any censorship and control
publishing of some twenty newspapers, weeklies and monthly magazines and
other occasional informative printed media, which fact is denying the
constant thesis of the separatist circles that Albanians in Kosovo and
Metohija are allegedly deprived of all the rights to receive information in
their mother tongue.

[09] DONOR EXHIBITION FOR ORPHAN CHILDREN
Radmila Milentijevic, Republican Minister of Information, opened yesterday
evening at the Club of the Army of Yugoslavia the exhibition of the
Yugoslav painters, donors for the future foundation "Drina" for aid to the
orphan children. All the earnings from the auction sale of the exhibited
works of 38 renown painters will be used for the most endangered talented
children. "According to the official records, in Yugoslavia there are some
34,000 children without parents, which is a great obligation both of the
state and of the people. Yugoslavia has done a lot until now in helping
these children, at the national and at the international level, and we
shall continue to do so in future and cooperate with all the factors in the
country and abroad", said Minister Milentijevic. Nevenka Novakovic-
Anastasijevic, president of the Yugoslav humanitarian society "Drina" said
that over the last six years Yugoslav artists have donated some 40 thousand
works of art for humanitarian purposes.

[10] KOSOVO CAN BE DISCUSSED ONLY IN OUR COUNTRY
Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) will not participate at the so-called
"round table on Serbian-Albanian relations in Kosovo and Metohija", which
is to be held in New York, at the proposal of the American organization
"Project for National Relations", with the presence of some representatives
of the Albanian national minority and representatives of some political
parties from Belgrade. SPS is of the view that the talks about the exercise
of rights, freedoms and responsibilities which the Albanian national
minority is enjoying in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution
of the Republic of Serbia and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia, can be conducted only in our country, with full respect of its
independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, stated the SPS
spokesman Ivica Dacic. He specified that Kosovo and Metohija are an
unalienable part of Serbia, and that all these matters of the achievements
of rights of national minorities in this province must be treated as an
internal affair of our country. Socialist Party of Serbia is of the view
that any internationalization of this problem is both unnecessary and
detrimental, because it will not contribute to the normalization of the
situation in Kosovo and Metohija, where it is not a question of the non-
existence but of un-exercise of all the rights and freedoms of the Albanian
national minority, under the influence of the separatist leaders, specified
Dacic. The essence of our politics in Kosovo and Metohija, as in fact in
the entire Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, is the full civil and national
equality, in accordance with the principles of peaceful life together of
all the citizens, and development within Serbia and Yugoslavia, and against
all forms of secession, said the SPS spokesman Ivica Dacic.

[11] SECOND DRAFT VERSION OF THE LAW ON INFORMATION TO BE PRESENTED TODAY
Republican Minister of Information, Prof.Dr. Radmila Milentijevic, will
present today in the Government of the Republic of Serbia, at the press
conference for local and foreign journalists, the second draft version of
the republican Law on Public Information. The first draft version of the
Law was presented one month ago, and two panel discussions were held on
this subject in the republican parliament and several public debates of
professional associations and political organizations. Minister of
Information while presenting the first draft of the Law underlined that the
provisions of the Law will be supplemented and suggestions and proposals
from the public debate respected.
