  • [01] FIRM UNITY BETWEEN SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO AND STRENGTHENING OF YUGOSLAVIA

Firm unity between Serbia and Montenegro and strengthening of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia are the guarantees for security and successful development of the country. This was concluded during the talks between the Presidents of Serbia and Montenegro, Slobodan Milosevic and Momir Bulatovic. The attempts to stage in front of the public a conflict between Serbia and Montenegro can be understood only as a part of strategy for weakening of one and the other republic, and weakening of Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia is a lasting and vital interest of the Serbian and Montenegrin peoples and of all the citizens of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, whose politics are based and implemented on the principles of national equality and successful achievement of the joint interests of peoples and all of its citizens and an accelerated economic and cultural development. This was stated yesterday, among others, during the meeting between Presidents Slobodan Milosevic and Momir Bulatovic, which was devoted to the issues of the actual political situation and further economic development of the country.

[02] FALSIFIED PHOTOGRAPHS FROM "CONCENTRATION CAMPS" IN THE REPUBLIC OF SRPSKA

The famous photograph of people behind barbed wire, which was broadcasted in August 1992 by the TV station ITN as a photograph from Trnopolje, intended to prove the existance of "concentration camps" in the Republic of Srpska, is a forgery and is documenting a completely different situation. This is the result of a three-month investigation by the free-lance journalist Thomas Deichmann published by the Frankfurt magazine "NOVO". Deichmann was visiting the very locations, had talks with witnesses and in The Hague investigated the materials of the International Criminal Tribunal. He concluded that the journalist crew of the ITN television was in fact itself within the space fenced with barbed wire and that the "war victims" were outside of the wire. The space of some 500 meters square belonged to the shop of agricultural products and the barbed wire around it was intended to prevent steeling of goods. The shots with people "behind barbed wire" were edited within the report about the prison camps, which caused an avalanche of reactions by the world public. Penny Marshall, member of the TV crew which made the falsified shots of the concentration camp and which for it was awarded many journalistic awards, at that time stated the following: "This picture of people behind barbed wire, starved people, this picture was the alarm signal for the entire Europe. If the report did not contain this picture, the impact would not have been so strong". Through his investigation, journalist Deichmann showed in what way "the crucial pictures of the war in Bosnia" were taken.

[03] INSTIGATION FOR BROADENING OVERALL RELATIONS BETWEEN YUGOSLAVIA AND ITALY

President of the Republic Slobodan Milosevic, received yesterday Sten Marchegalia, President of the "Marchegalia Group" which is ranking among the greatest European steel producers, and his host Dusan Matkovic, President of the "Sartid 1913". The guests informed President Milosevic of the course of realization of the long-term business arrangement which "Sartid 1913" and "Marchegalia Group" are realizing and whose value is reaching 600 million US dollars. President Milosevic expressed his satisfaction because of the successful business cooperation between the two companies. It represents an important instigation for broadening and acceleration of the overall economic relations between the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Italy.

[04] BRCKO - A STRATEGIC INTEREST OF THE REPUBLIC OF SRPSKA

According to the Dayton Accords, Brcko is an integral part of the territory of the Republic of Srpska and if the international fora care for the respect of these Accords, then they shall have this in mind while passing the final decision. This is one of the crucial conclusions from the debate which under the title "Brcko - A Strategic Interest of the Republic of Srpska" was organized in Banja Luka by the Socialist Party of the Republic of Srpska. However, if the international community should fail to respect the text and basic principles of the Dayton Accords, then a new source of instability will be created in Bosnia-Herzegovina and in the Balkans, with unforeseeable consequences for the local population. According to Zivko Radisic, President of the Socialist Party of the Republic of Srpska, Brcko is a question of national and statehood survival, which means that the status and destiny of Brcko can not be placed under the question mark. Every other solution may endanger all the efforts to preserve peace and the Dayton Accords. The legal value of the Dayton Accords is not allowing violation of the principle of territorial integrity and continuity of the Republic of Srpska, stated Dr. Zeljko Mirjanic. The attempts to substitute legal interpretation with the political one, according to which the subject of arbitration would extend also to the city itself, represents a violation of the peace agreement, and thus would violate the very constitutional structure of the Republic of Srpska and of Bosnia-Herzegovina, says Mirjanic.

[05] MORINA: YUGOSLAV GOVERNMENT IS PREPARING NATIONAL PROGRAM FOR REFUGEES

Commissioner for Refugees of Serbia Bratislava Morina, had talks yesterday with the new special UNHCR envoy for the region of former Yugoslavia, Carol Fober. She informed Fober of the five years of operation of the Commissariat in providing shelter and care for refugees and stated that this year will be the most difficult one because the international humanitarian aid has been substantially decreased, while at the same time the domestic financing potentials have been significantly reduced. The return of refugees is the basic orientation of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, said Morina and announced that the Government of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia is preparing a national program which will offer lasting solutions for the refugees. While speaking of the integration of a certain number of refugees in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Morina expressed expectations that the international community will have more understanding for our difficulties and that it shall provide funds for the lasting accommodation of thousands of refugees who are going to remain in the FR of Yugoslavia. Fober underlined that he is appreciating humanitarian efforts made by the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in the accommodation and care for a large number of refugees, confirming that the UNHCR will continue to do its utmost in the support to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

[06] LARGE-SCALE DEALS OF SERBIAN SHIP BUILDERS

Ten ship-building yards in Serbia are in a strong export offensive, with excellent prospects during this year to achieve superior results which will make possible for the domestic enterprises to take again firm positions on the world market. This was stated by the Secretary of the Association of Metal and Electrical Industry of the Chamber of Economy of Serbia Jezdimir Arsic. In his opinion, ship-building yards which are employing over 5,000 workers, will give important contribution to the realization of the planned exports increase in the year 1997 in Serbia, because they are making very sophisticated navigation units, with prices compatible on the world market.

[08] EXODUS OF SERBS IS THREATENING

Prime Minister of the Government of Serbs in Eastern Slavonia, Vojislav Stanimirovic, stated that in case the UN Security Council is to accept the Letter of Intent of the Croat government, and refuse the Serbian requests, this spring very probably there will be an exodus of Serbs from this region. In order for them to stay, Serbs need guarantees, and the ones which are being offered by the Croat Government in its Letter of Intent "are applicable in some democratic state, but not in Croatia", said Stanimirovic. According to him, the Serbian side can not accept that the region of Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Srem be divided into two counties, because in this request of Croatia there is a hidden intention, through majorisation, to block every Serbian initiative. He also said that in the Letter of Intent there is not one word about the refugees, their status and compensation for their property. Over the past months a certain number of Croat refugees did return to the frontier areas, but the Serbian refugees are still waiting, although they are six-fold in number in respect to the Croat ones.
