  • [01] MILOSEVIC: PRESERVING AND STRENGTHENING THE POLITICAL STABILITY IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FOR SERBIA

Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Marjanovic, informed President Milosevic yesterday about the preparations for the realization of the structural and ownership transformations in the national economy. The activities promoted by the Government and other state institutions encompass the most important measures for the adaptation of the financial legislation to the needs of a quick harmonization of our economy with the global economic flows, as well as various solutions for structural and ownership changes. During the meeting it has been observed that the reforms serve as a basis for the 1997 economic policy, and for the new set of laws regarding employment. President Milosevic stressed that the reforms will quicken the economic rehabilitation of the country and create a prospective for rapid development, representing the crucial elements for the stability of the country. He also stressed that the success of the economic policy in general greatly depends on state officials involved in its implementation, but also on the people in the companies, and in financial institutions, which will entail a certain reconstruction of the Cabinet. The preservation and strengthening of political stability in the country has enormous importance for Serbia, said Mr. Milosevic, adding that confrontations that have occurred due to political differences are damaging our country not only politically but economically as well and are obstructing the implementation of development, economic and social objectives. Political differences should not cause the blockade of economic and political life of a country, and political and inter-party controversies must be settled in a constructive and democratic way, with a particular role and involvement of the Government and its ministries - stressed President Milosevic.

    [02] RADIATION IN BOSNIA!

Dutch radio station and news agency APN quotes the statement made by the attorney of the military Union - Mr. Arts, that NATO has stocked uranium containing ammunition in Bosnia. The news cause much excitement in Holland, especially after two dozen ex-Blue Helmets from Holland appeared on TV. The young men that were stationed in Lukavac (Bosnia) are suffering from an unknown disease characterized by weakness, persistent nausea, vomiting, constant tiredness and change of mood. The news of radio-active ammunition and the sickness of the soldiers is being closely tied by the local media. Local population made numerous reports of unusual changes in flora and fauna after NATO "surgical" bombing of Serbian positions in Bosnia. This was also linked to the type of bombs used in the NATO bombings. Officials at the NATO headquarters in Brussels stated that the "Alliance center knows nothing" of this type of ammunition.

    [03] MOSLEMS ARE ATTACKING ZUBAK

The interview with Moslem-Croatian Federation Presidency member Kresimir Zubak published by the Zagreb daily "Vjesnik", in which he affirmed that Moslem leader Alija Izetbegovic never renounced to the idea of an Islamic state, has been judged by Moslem Democratic Action Party (SDA) circles as an attack on the Chairman of the three-member Presidency and against the SDA itself. SDA spokesman Ismet Grbo remarked that this interview and attack has been published now that the agreement between the Serbs and the Croats on the alternative proposal for the construction of a river port in Orasje has been made public. Mr. Zubak's remarks are quite similar to the 1991 propaganda that led to the war between the Bosnian Moslems and Croats - stressed Mr. Grbo.

[04] "TRUTH ABOUT THE SERBS FUND" INDICTMENT AGAINST ALIJA IZETBEGOVIC *

The "Truth about the Serbs Fund" submitted to the International Criminal Court for Crimes of War in Former Yugoslavia, an indictment against Alija Izetbegovic - President of the Dayton-defined Bosnia and Herzegovina - for genocide against the Serbs, crimes against humanity and serious breaches of the Geneva Convention. Judge Richard Goldstone confirmed that he received the accusation documents and according to non-official sources, the first hearing has been scheduled for January 21. Mr. Izetbegovic is being accused of staging the Markalle massacre on February 4, 1995, when 69 Sarajevans died and 200 were wounded, the shelling being immediately ascribed to the Serbs. Izetbegovic re-staged the same crime on August 28, 1995. Evidence is based in statements given by immediate witnesses, ranging from Lord David Owen to Col. Andrey Demurenko, upon reports filed by UN observers, UNPROFOR officers, and other sources. Izetbegovic can also be prosecuted for inciting ethnic hatred, because he is the author of the ill-famed "Islamic Declaration" - a pamphlet that advocates the idea that wherever the Moslem population represents the majority, the state must be exclusively based on Islamic religion and Sharia legislation.

[05] MAJOR GROWTH OF EXPORTS IN DECEMBER

In December 1996, Yugoslavia exported goods worth 168 million dollars, which is 46,2 per cent more than in December 1995. Overall Yugoslav exports in 1996 were 20,3 per cent greater that in the previous year (1995). Thus, export results can bee judged positive, especially in view of the fact that Yugoslavia has not yet been re-admitted to international trade and financial institutions and that international sanctions were lifted in October 1996 - said Mr. Milovan Zivkovic - Director of the Federal Statistics Institute. According to the latest statistical data, most of the Yugoslav exports last month were directed to Italy, Germany and the Russian Federation. Another favorable element is that the percentage of final products in overall Yugoslav exports is growing.

    [06] MORE THAN TERRORISM

The terrorist attack on the Rector of the Pristina University, occurred only a day after the visit of the UN Reporter on Human Rights to Pristina where Ms. Elisabeth Renn was told by ethnic Albanian leaders Ibrahim Rugova, Adem Demaci and Pajazit Nusi that their people are threatened in Kosovo and Metohija.

Numerous facts indicate that the ethnic Albanian separatists and terrorist hold nothing sacred in realizing their final objective "Kosovo Republic" and secession from Yugoslavia. Along with continuous attacks on local Serbs and Montenegrins and Police officers - defined as attacks against the state - Albanian terrorists are now frequently assassinating their own co- nationals labeling them as "traitors", "servants of the Belgrade regime" and "Police informers". Their radicalism goes to the extent that they have discarded deeply rooted traditions of the Albanian people - based on religion - that during the Ramadan fast not even the "holy war" should not be waged, let alone blood vengeance and attacks. This year the tradition has been breached. In the past five years alone, about 60 terrorist attacks have been carried out against police and Ministry of Interior officers. They resulted in the treacherous assassination (mostly by night and with ambushes) of 17 police officers and inspectors, and the wounding of 35 other policemen. All terrorist means were used: explosive and arson devices, hand-grenades, "Kalasnikoffs" and other automatic weapons coming from Albania. Alarmed by the change of stands of many Albanians, who no longer believe their empty promises of a national state, and are increasingly making business profits in the country they already have, Albanian terrorists have begun to attack their own people. The first on their list are those ethnic Albanians that publicly stated their loyalty to Serbia and Yugoslavia - their country of birth - and renounced to the suggested "spare" fatherland. In the recent period, terrorists have assassinated five co-nationals always during the night and with shots in the back. This illustrates more than clearly their determination to spread terror but also speaks about their sense of honor, and state of heart.

[07] TERRORIST ATTACK AGAINST THE RECTOR OF THE PRISTINA UNIVERSITY

Yesterday morning in Pristina, an explosion of a car-bomb seriously injured the Rector of the Pristina University - Dr. Radivoje Papovic, and his driver Nikola Lalic. At least 10 kilograms of explosives were placed in the trunk of a parked car and detonated by remote control when the automobile the Rector was in was driving by. The terrorist attack on Dr. Papovic - University Rector and Member of Serbian Parliament has been condemned by numerous political parties and associations. The Executive council of the Socialist Party of Serbia Regional Board for Kosovo and Metohija issued a statement indicating that the method used in the attack leads to the conclusion that ethnic Albanian extremists have chosen a bloody strategy, which will bring no good to any side. The escalation of terrorism in Kosovo and Metohija indicates that the ethnic Albanian separatists have chosen the darkest tactics in order to intimidate the Serbian and Montenegrin people and the loyal Albanians - remark numerous commentaries.

    [08] ENHANCING NEIGHBORLY COOPERATION

"Top priorities in the Yugoslav foreign and domestic policy are strengthening peace, stability and neighborly relations in the region, and the normalization of our international status, i.e. equitable partnership with all countries and the active participation in all international organizations and integration", said Federal Foreign Minister Milan Milutinovic in an interview for "Medjunarodna Politika" (International Politics) magazine. Among the priorities, he included the economic and democratic development of the country. Yugoslavia will continue to actively take part in the coherent implementation of the Dayton Agreement . It also constitutes the fundamental document for the improvement of relations with former Yugoslav republics and neighboring countries. "The normalization of relations with Macedonia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the recognition of Slovenia, constitute practical confirmation of the Yugoslav stands", said Mr. Milutinovic. In his opinion, "the policy of peace, neighborly relations and cooperation has turned Yugoslavia into a desirable partner for European countries and other states throughout the world. It is an advantage we will use to a full extent in the process of reinstatement of our country in the international community".
