  • [01] SANCTIONS ON YUGOSLAVIA FINALLY LIFTED

The Security Council last night by adopting the Resolution 1074, finally and formally lifted the economic sanctions against Yugoslavia. The unanimous decision on lifting of the sanctions came into force immediately by the very act of its adoption. Sanctions were imposed on Yugoslavia on May 30, 1992 and suspended on November 22, 1995 in order to be last night finally lifted. By the Security Council Resolution, the Committee for Sanctions was also dissolved which was existing throughout this time at the United Nations.

Through the Resolution on lifting the sanctions against Yugoslavia, the economic embargo was also finally and formally lifted on the Republic of Srpska. (TANJUG, October 2, 1996)

[02] MILOSEVIC: STABLE PEACE, STABLE OVERALL ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

On the occasion of lifting of sanctions against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, President of the Republic of Serbia Slobodan Milosevic addressed the public with the following words: "Today, all of us together have finally come out of the most difficult period in which our country had found itself in its recent history. The sanctions have been lifted. Over these ten months, from Dayton until today, under the conditions of suspended sanctions, we have started a successful economic recovery. Today, with the lifting of sanctions, with the final lifting of sanctions, this path should be much faster and much more successful. As of today and onwards, our future will depend on our work. Our targets now, of successful economic development, of elevation of the standard of living will be both faster and easier accessible. Our country, which is having enormous possibilities for an accelerated economic development, will utilize these possibilities comprehensively and successfully, and this will depend on all of us. Therefore, I wish you all success in your work, success to every citizen, to every family and to every village and town, in the times which are before us, in the times in which we are expecting a stable peace and a stable overall economic and social development. Good Luck! (TANJUG, Politika, October 2, 1996)

[03] MILUTINOVIC: AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT EVENT

In his statement for the "Politika" daily newspaper, on the occasion of the final lifting of sanctions against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, chief of the Yugoslav diplomacy, Milan Milutinovic especially emphasized that Yugoslavia "from the very beginning of the eruption of crisis, was striving for solution of all the problems through a dialogue and by political means", as well as that "it gave the crucial contribution towards reaching of and the implementation so far of the Dayton Peace Accords for peace in Bosnia-Herzegovina". Minister Milutinovic also added that "bearing all this in mind, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia is rightfully expecting that its unavoidable constructive and peaceful role and its policy will be respected and that the Security Council will soon pass the decision for the FR of Yugoslavia to take its place in the United Nations which rightfully belongs to it...". (Politika, October 2, 1996)

[04] CONDITIONS STILL DO NOT EXIST FOR THE ELECTIONS

Deputy Prime Minister of Croatia Ivica Kostovic claims that from the Croat side everything is ready for the elections in the Slavonia and Baranja Region to be held on December 15, 1996, supporting this claim by the fact that also "in Bosnia-Herzegovina, where the situation was rather ambiguous and complicated, the elections were held". Kostovic says that the right of vote will have only the Croat citizens and this in accordance with the census of eligible voters from the year 1991. Nothing is, however, being said about the manner in which the citizenship is to be proven. If for this purpose only the documents will serve, which are at a very slow pace being issued by the Croat officials, in December tens of thousands of Serbs will remain without the right of vote, because, regardless of the fact that they are listed on the eligible voters lists, they will not be able to prove by Croat documents their Croat citizenship. Simply speaking, they will not have them, and the documents that they now possess, Croat authorities do not recognize. (Politika, October 2, 1996)

[05] UNDER THE BATON OF THE UNITED NATIONS

The elections in Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Srem will be conducted, in accordance with the Erdut Agreement, by the UN transitional administration. This was stated yesterday in Vukovar by the main spokesman of the UNTAS Philip Arnold. While commenting of the declaration by the Croat Sabor (Parliament) which is requesting that the UNTAS mandate be terminated on January 15, 1997, he said that "the UN transitional administration has informed of this as well as of the Serbia request for the extension of the mandate for another year, the Security Council which is to pass the final decision". (Borba, October 2, 1996)

[06] TESLA - THE THIRD MILLENNIUM

President of the Republic of Serbia Slobodan Milosevic received yesterday representatives of the organizers of the International Conference "Tesla - The Third Millennium", which is to be held this month in Belgrade, on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of birth of Nikola Tesla. President Milosevic is the sponsor of this great event in the honor of the scientist who through his inventions has marked our contemporary times. There was talk of the further development of science in our country and its successful integration in the world scientific trends. (Vecernje novosti, October 2, 1996)

    [07] REFUGEES ARE NOT WELCOME

The authorities in Berlin have announced yesterday that they have started informing refuges from Bosnia that they are no longer welcome in Germany and that they have the deadline of four weeks to leave the country. The spokes-person of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin said that 1,500 persons, among them single men and women and couples without children, as well as 350 refugees who arrived to Germany after signing of the Dayton Accords, must leave the country by the end of October. (Nasa Borba, October 2, 1996)

    [08] RICHES IN THE SOIL

Mineral and thermal water sources in Serbia correspond to the quantity of 550 million tons of liquid fuel. Total yield of these natural sources is some 4,000 liters per second. Our thermal waters, in some 60 spas - medical and tourist resorts, are being used for balneologic, sports, recreative and tourist purposes. These waters will be the topic of discussions at the scientific gathering to be held in Arandjelovac (Serbia) on October 3 and 4, 1996. (Politika ekspres, October 2, 1996)
