[01] General Pavel Abraham's statement
Former Chief Inspector of Romanian Police General Pavel Abraham said in a
statement to the press that his dismissal is the result of some "back stage
manoeuvres" and of the misinformation of the Interior Minister by people
around him. Pavel Abraham declared that when the restructuring of police
started, some decision-making people inside the Interior Ministry tried to
render the task more difficult. RADOR, September 9
[02] Future national conference of PDSR;
The session of the National Council of the PDSR will take place on Friday.
PDSR President Ion Iliescu said in a statement that four major issues will
be discussed during the session. Among them, there are the social- economic
programme of the PDSR, the activity of the PDSR representives in local
administration and in local and county councils as well as the image of
PDSR- its relations with the public opinion and mass-media. RADOR,

[03] Stand of trade unions in the education system
The National Council of the Federation of the Independent Education Trade
Unions "Spiru Haret" declared that the amendment of the Educational Draft
through Emegency Order is not recommended. The Council asked the MPs and
the presidents of the education commissions in the Senate and the House of
the Deputies to analyse proposals made by the Union Federation. RADOR,

[04] Mining Trade Unions meeting
The executive board of the National Federation of the Mining Unions from
Romania gathered on Monday in Vatra Dornei. Participants included managers
of the mining adminstration throughout the country, the leaders of the
mining unions and representatives of the Ministry of Industries, Labour and
Social Protection. The issues discussed were the Government emergnecy order
on some measures of conservation and closing up of some mines and solutions
aomed at stoping the migration of miners from the productive branches.

[05] Romanian President visiting China
The oficial talks between Romanian President Emil Constantinescu and
Chinese President Jiang Zemin ended and were followed by the concluding of
the official documents. In a joint communique issued at the end of their
talks they said that the dialogue took place in a sincere and friendly
atmosphere. The heads of the two countries made an exchange of opinions on
strengthening bilateral relations and also on some international issues of
mutual interest. RADOR, September 9
[06] Romanian-Lebanese relations
A communique received issued by the Romanian Government says Prime Minister
Victor Ciorbea met on Monday at Victoria Palace the delegation of the
General Assembly of the Republic of Lebanon led by its president, Nabib
Berri. During the talks it has been discussed the present stage of
implementing the agreements signed and ratified in previous years,
especially the terms regarding the exchange of labour force and the
granting of one year visas for the Lebanese citizens in Romania and also
the possibility of extending their visas. They also discussed Romania's
participation in the reconstruction of Lebanon after 17 years of war,
especially regarding the building of houses and bridges. RADOR, September

[07] Romanian, Latvian and Lithuanian position on the EU enlargement
In a letter sent to the president of the European Union, Romania, Lithuania
and Latvia took a stand regarding the reports worked out by the European
Comission in Brussels as published in July. The European Comission
suggested that the three countries should be excluded from the group of the
countries to start early next year negotiations for joining EU. The
European Comission considers that only six of the twelve countries are
ready to join. The permanent representatives in Brussels of the member
countries will have discussions over the issue during this week followed by
letters to the dissatisfied countries. RADOR, September 9
[08] Opening ceremony of the Romanian-British regional military training
centre
The Romanian-British regional military training centre was established on
Monday in Bucharest and the opening ceremony was attended the General Chief
of Staff of the Romanian Army, General Constantin Degeratu, who declared:
"Romania has military cooperation agreements with the majority of the NATO
member states. The most intense relations - I mean the volume, the nature
and their aim - are those of cooperation with the United States of America
and the military assistance which we got from the US in order to acomplish
the joining objectives. The second agreement is the military cooperation
programme with Great Britain". RADOR, September 9

Weather in Romania will be mostly sunny and warm. Some showers are forecast
in northern regions. Temperatures will range from 5 centigrades in the
