[01] King Michael I is spending his holidays in Romania
Former Romanian sovereign King Michael I, together with Queen Ana are due
to arrive on Monday, August 4th, in Timisoara, in the first stage of a
vacation in Romania. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI (August 3, 13:00 hours) said
that will be a private visit, and a meeting with supporters in Timisoara is
only due at the international airport. The Royal family is to leave for
Arad on Tuesday. RADOR, August 4
[02] A budget for the second half of half of the year
A draft budget has been drawn, and last details are to be set on Monday,
while a final forAula is due on Tuesday, the guvernment spokesman said.
Referring to the budget for the second half of the year, a Finance Ministry
official, Dan Radu Rusanu, told RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI (August 3, 7:00
hours) that was an austerity budget. He explained that the innitial budget
had been based on an exchange rate of 7,600 lei per dollar, while the
current average rate is just 7,180 lei. The main priorities of the budget
are health, education, and social assistance. RADOR, August 4
[03] Companies to be liquidated
The chairman of the State Ownership Fund, Sorin Dimitriu, told RADIO FREE
EUROPE (August 3, 20:00 hours) that reform minister Ulm Spineanu knew too
well that Petromidia Navodari and Calan plant did not meet the criteria to
be included in the liquidation list. Bids from five companies from the US,
Switzerland, South Korea and two from Romania are currently analysed, and a
final conclusion is expected by next Thursday. Three offers are to be
selected for the sale of Petromidia coApany. RADOR, August 4
[04] Heavy rains in Romania
Waters of rivers in southern Romania have swallen due to heavy rains on
Saturday and Sunday, flooding several towns, including Campina, Campulung
and Targoviste, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI (August 3, 13:00 hours) reported.
Rains will continue to fall, weather forecasts say. In the town of Breaza
some 1,000 houses have been flooded, and water for domestic use is not
available. In several towns electrical power supply is missing. RADIO
ROMANIA ACTUALITATI (August 3, 16:00 hours) said railway traffic is
difficult between Campina and Gura Beliei, on the Prahova Valley. The level
of rivers in western and central Romania also went high, and Arges,
Ialomita and Prahova burst over the alarm level. The counties of Prahova,
Dambovita, Suceava, Arges, Caras-Severin and Valcea have been affected by
floods, and two people were killed in Vaslui county. Large areas of farming
land are under waters. A local official in the county of Prahova told RADIA
ROMANIA ACTUALITATI (August 3, 13:00 hours) troops were in alert and have
been sent to help local people affected by floods. RADOR, August 4
[05] Price increases in underground transportation
A price increase has been annunced starting August 4, 1997 for undergraound
transport in Bucharest. The general manager of the Underground company told
RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI (August 3, 13:00 hours) that was justified by the
rise in consummer price index for May and June 1997, and money are to be
spent for maintenance and repaire works. RADOR, August 4
[06] Price cuts for oil
Petromidia refinery announced it would cut the oil price by 100 lei per
liter starting August 4. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI (August 3, 13:00 hours)
said cheaper oil will be available only from stations supplied by companies
managed by Petromidia. RADOR, August 4
[07] Romanian illegal emmigrants detained by Austrian police
27 Romanian illegal emigrants, 17 men and 10 women have been arrested last
night by the Austrian police near the border with Slovakia - news agency
FRANCE PRESSE said, quoting the Austrian Interior Ministry. A guide leading
the group, a Romanian, has also been detained. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI
(August 3, 19:00 hours) reported the ministry said the Romanians had been
left by Slovak cabs near the Austrian border, where the guide waited for
them in a truck. The Romanians tried to escape when the Austrian police
found them, driving towards Vienna by 120 km/h. They have been stoped in
the town of Gattendorf. RADOR, August 4
[08] A Romanian sailor in the Arlington Cemetery
A tomb in the US national cemetery of Arlington is bearing the name of a
Romanian sailor. VOICE OF AMERICA (August 3, 6:00 hours) said the Romanian
sailor, Constantin Teodorescu, who served on a US warship whose explosion
in Port Havana, on February 15, 1889 marked the start of the Spanish-
American war of 1889-1899. Born in Braila, in 1863, Constantin Teodorescu
became an American officer. RADOR, August 4
[09] Weather in Romania
Weather in Romania will be unstable and cold. The sky will be cloudy ans
heavy rains are forecast all over the country. Temperatures will range from
