[01] Restructuring the banking system
A communique of the Romanian presidency indicates that the restructuring of
the banking system and of the public companies as part of the economic
reform is absolutely necessary. The communique follows reports in the press
about an alleged collusion between the parties of the ruling coallition on
the control of banks and public companies. The information has already
given rise to protests from the former rulers. The Romanian president is
calling for a sense of responsibility and balance to unprime tension. He
also urges all forces of the nation to put into practice the government's
reform programmes which will bring about progress and prosperity for

[02] Gunnar Janson report
On Monday in Paris, Gunnar Janson, the raporteur for Romania, isNto present
the Legal Committee of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly a
report drawn up following his visit to Romania after November 1996
elections. Attending the session will be Adrian Nastase, first vice-
chairman of the Party of Social Democracy, the main opposition party.
Nastase will urge an end to the monitoring imposed by the Council of Europe

[03] Ethnic Hungarians Union congress
The town of Deva, in western Romania, hosted the meeting of ethnic
Hungarian Democratic Union representatives. Marko Bela, the leader of the
union, highlighted the ethnic Hungarian Union in Romania was satisfied with
the cooperation of the ruling coallition, and that the union would support
the executive in implementing the reform programme. It was agreed for the
UDMR congress to take place in Targu Mures, a town in Central Romania,
probably in October. UDMR is a member of the ruling coallition in Romania.

[04] King Michael will visit Timisoara
The former sovereign of Romania, King Michail I, his wife, Anna of Bourbon
Parma, and their daughter, princess Margaret have confirmed their visit to
Timisoara, a city in western Romania, on April 25. The visit will last

An unusual cold and wet day in Romania today, with temperatures ranging
from 0 and 8 Centigrade. This morning in Bucharest it snowed and the
