[01] Portugal stated its support for Romania's early integration into NATO
and the EU
Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Severin is in a two-day formal visit to
Lisbon, as part of Romania's diplomatic efforts in view of its accession to
NATO. On Wednesday, he met his Portuguese counterpart Jaime Gama who said
his country was determined to openly support Romania's first-wave
integration into NATO and the EU. According to the Romanian Foreign
Ministry, the Romanian and Portuguese foreign ministers stressed a great
number of Latin countries were members of the EM and NATO. Likewise, the
Portuguese Government came up with an assistance offer meant to accelerate
Romania's integration into Western structures by training Romanian experts
in Lisbon, and through Know-How transfer. Thus, Portugal joins Spain,
Turkey and France in their offers of assistance. RRI-RADOR, March 27
[02] Romanians are the most optimistic among candidates to EU membership
Romanians are the most optimistic of the candidates for EU membership,
reads a communique released in Bucharest by the European Commission
delegation to Romania. According to the seventh Eurobarometer survey for
Central and Eastern Europe, 80% of the Romanian interviewees stood for
Romania's integration into the EU, coming first in terms of the positive

[03] Tax evasion in Romania accounts for about 70% of the State budget
In about three weeks, the Romanian Intelligence Service will present in
Parliament its Report of activity, its director Virgil Magureanu saMd. One
of the main threats Romania has to face, according to Mr. Magureanu, is tax
evasion which accounts for about 70% of the State budget. He also said that
the underground economy amounts to around 35% of the GDP. As for Romania's
chances to join NATO in the first wave, Magureanu said that they can be

[04] Talks in Bucharest between interior ministers of Romania and Turkey
Cooperation in fighting drug trafficking, terorist propaganda, and illegal
immigration made the topic of a meeting between the interior ministers of
Romania and Turkey, Gavril Dejeu, and Meral Aksener, respectively. The
Turkish Interior Minister told a press conference in Bucharest that Ankara
supports Romania's and Bulgaria's accession to NATO. The Turkish Interior
Minister also handed over to President Emil Constantinescu an invitation
from his Turkish counterpart Suleyman Demirel, to visit Turkey. The
invitation was accepted by President Constantinescu who wilM visit Turkey

[05] A conference on investment oportunities in Romania opened in
Washington
The conference on the topic Romania - the no.1 growing market in Eastern
Europe got underway in Washington. The conference is attended by
personalities from both Romania and the United States: Romanian Minister
for Reform Ulm Spineanu, Frank Vargo and William Ginsberg from the US Trade
Department, and Marshall Adair from the US State Department. Romania is
also represented by decision-makers from 41 investment firms, banks and by
more than 50 managers of big companies. The American side is represented by
36 companies and financial societies of international repute. RRI-RADOR,

[06] The weather
The weather is starting to get warmer in Romania, with highs expected to
range between 9 and 14 Centigrade. In the north and north-west of the
country rains are possible in the evening. After an unseasonably cold
morning, the weather is expected to get warMer, reaching some 10 Centigrade
