[01] The European Union foreign ministers welcomed Romania's reform
programme
On Monday, the E.U. foreign ministers welcomed Romania's reform programme.
During the Bruxelles meeting of the Romania- E.U. Association Council, the
E.U. foreign ministers promised to further support for Romania's efforts to
accede to the European Union. The E.U. foreign ministers praised the
political changes in Bucharest and the economic programme of the new
government. The chairman of the E.U.Concil of Ministers, Hans Van Mielo,
also appreciated the Romanian-Hungarian Basic Treaty and expressed his hope
that Romania would sign a similar one with Ukraine. In his turn, the
Romanian foreign minister, Adrian Severin, said he hoped a treaty with
Ukraine would be signed as soon as possible. But he added that this treaty
needed to be drafted in such a way so that it should last for at least 100
years, therefore the treaty should not be designed just for immediate
compliance with NATO joining demands. RRI-RADOR, March 25
[02] The Party of Social Democracy and the Greater Romania Party resumed
their participation in Parliament
Two of the three opposition parties in the Romanian Parliament - the Party
of Social Democracy and the Greater Romania Party - resumed their
participation in the plenary sessions of the Parliament, after a week's
boycot. The MP's of the other opposition party, the National Unity Party,
did take part in the last week's sessions, but they wore a white strip on
their arms. This has been the first open conflict between power and
opposition since the general elections, held last November. The Party of
Social Democracy senator, Teodor Melescanu, said on Monday that the
attitude was neither a mere political show, nor determined by a private
affair, but was ment to settle normal relations between Government and
Parliament and between power and the opposition. Nevertheless, the source
of the conflict was determined by the Senate's decision to extend the
lifting of the parliamentary immunity of Corneliu Vadim Tudor, the
president of the Greater Romania Party, after he had been sued on charges
of slandering. The decision to lift Vadim Tudor's parliamentary immunity
had been taken by the former ruling party, the Party of Social Democracy.
The crisis was defused after the meeting between Romania's president, Emil
Constantinescu and the opposition leaders. RRI-RADOR, March 25

The Romanian Television Company has become a shareholder in European news

accord with Euronews director, Jose Villa Abello, to this effect. The
contract grants Romanian TV the right to use two 15-minute packages daily
