[01] Talks in Bonn between the Romanian foreign minister and the German
foreign minister
Romania's integration into EU and NATO was high on the agenda of Wednesday
talks in Bonn between German foreign minister Klaus Kinkel and his Romanian
counterpart Adrian Severin. Pleading for Romania's accession to NATO and
the EU, Severin explained that there were worries that Romania might lose
contact with the Euro-Atlantic structures and remain a sort of "no man's
land" in the field of security. So far, France, Spain, Italy and Greece
have already said that they would support Romania's integration into NATO.
A communique of the German Foreign Ministry reads that Bonn will not say
which candidate countries it supports for integration prior to the summit
due in Madrid over July 8 and 9. The German foreign minister will pay a
visit to Bucharest between April 30 and May 1. RRI-RADOR, March 20.
[02] Turkey will support Romania's integration into NATO
Talks are held in Bucharest between Romanian defense minister Victor Babiuc
and army general Cevik Bir, deputy chief of the General Staff of the
Turkish Army. General Cevik Bir said that Turkey would support Romania's
accession to NATO and that Bucharest would support Turkey's accession to
the EU. He also said that the two sides consider proper to continue their
cooperation in manufacturing armoured troop carriers in Turkey. RRI-RADOR,
March 20.
[03] The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is willing to
support Romania's reform programme
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is willing to support
reforms in Romania, David Hexter, the EBRD financial manager said on
Wednesday, after meeting with the Romanian president Emil Constantinescu.
David Hexter reasserted EBRD's intention to participate in the
privatisation of big Romanian banks and expressed its interest in the
Romanian Development Bank. EBRD also has shares in the "Ion Tiriac" Bank,
and is a founding member of Bucharest Bank. RRI-RADOR, March 20.
[04] Six Taiwanese sailors accused of having thrown overboard three
Romanian clandestine passengers were due to leave Canada on Thursday
Six Taiwanese sailors accused of having thrown overboard three Romanian
cladestine passengers were due to leave Canada on Thursday accompanied by
policemen. They are heading for Taiwan to stand trial, the Canadian justice
minister Allan Rock announced. Romania had asked for the six Taiwanese to
be extradited and tried in Bucharest. Acting on behalf of the Romanian
Government, the Canadian Government has tried to extradite the six sailors
but Taiwan opposed bitterly and insisted they should be sent to a Taiwanese
court. The incident took place on March 12, 1996. The Taiwanese, who were
on board the Maersk Dubai cargo ship, threw three Romanian clandestine
passengers onto international waters. The three Romanians almost certainly
died. RRI-RADOR, March 20.
[05] The weather
An unseasonably cold weather in Romania. Rains and snow are expected to
fall here and there. The highs of the day will range between 0 and 8
Centigrade. A cold and dull day in Bucharest, also. RADOR, March 20.
