The island of Kythera, although included in the Ionian Islands, has been greatly influenced by the Cyclades as far as Architecture is concerned. The Venetian Rule did not leave evident architectural marks in the island's towns and villages. The majority of the houses exhibit a severe style of bricks and stones using the traditional white colour of the Cyclades. The province of Kythera is characterized by scattered chapels of Byzantine and post-Byzantine architectural styles with beautiful frescoes and icons.
The cuisine on the island of Kythera is tasty and of good quality. One should taste the local "xerotigana" (a kind of fried bread) as well as the almond sweets and the "bezedes" (a kind of sweet).
