The GRNET 10Mbps line that connects Greece with TEN-34 is now operational. TEN-34 provides high speed connectivity between the national research networks of European countries. Via this line, GRnet connects with Europe and the U.S. parts of the Internet at 10Mbps.
Technically, the TEN-34 network topology consists of two subnetworks, connected at three points in Europe. One subnetwork is based on ATM Virtual Paths/leased lines and the other subnetwork is a managed IP network, provided by Unisource. TEN-34 has become operational in April 1997.
To test the high speeds provided by the ATM VP subnetwork of the TEN-34 project, you may traceroute to the web servers of the NRNs connected to the ATM VP subnetwork. The tracerouting host is www.ntua.gr:
You may view the TEN-34 line loads as provided by the TEN-34 NOC.
The co-ordination of the Greek participation to TEN-34 is provided by the Network Management Centre of the National Technical University of Athens in collaboration with the NETMODE laboratory of the Department of Electrical and Computing Engineering of the National Technical University.
A press release (in Greek) is available in MS Word 95 format. This press release includes a brief description of GR-NET (including its topology and current statistics) and a presentation of the developments of European research networks which lead to TEN-34.
