    • [01] FONTS FOR READING GREEK TEXT.

    To read Greek text with the appropriate Greek letters and not using Latin characters (ASCII), you must intall Greek fonts. The following line is a test; if you can read it, you do not need the Greek fonts. If you can not read it, you need those fonts.

    Using, for example the Hellas Arial or the Hellas Times fonts instead of the Arial or Times fonts, you will be able to read Greek and English in the same page. These fonts follow the standard ELOT-928, which is internationally known as ISO-8859-7 and is used in almost all pages written in Greek.

    To begin with, you must download the font files (194 KB). If you want, you may download an additional collection of more fonts (780 KB).

    Then you must install them in your computer following these steps :

    1. Copy the font files in a temporary directory e.g. c:\temp, and not in c:\windows.

    2. Using the File Manager go to the directory where you have downoladed the font files. These files are self-extracting. By double-clicking on the, say "hel_font.exe" file a group of files with extension .ttf will appear in the same directory (hit F5 to refresh the window in case you don't see them).

    3. Using Program Manager select Main and then Control Panel and Fonts.

      Double click on Fonts and select Add.... A dialog box will appear. From Directories: select the directory where the decompressed fonts are located (from step 2).

      Select "Copy Fonts to Windows Directory" and then "Select All" so that the programm will find and highlight all the fonts. Click on "OK" and the installation will finish.

    To read Greek through a Web Browser (for example, Netscape), start that program and go to " Options " then " set Preferences on... ". From the available list find the " Fonts and Colors ". The basic fonts will appear in a dialog box. Select Hellas Arial or Hellas Times for the proportional fonts and Hellas Courier for the fixed font. The font size, usually 10 or 12, should depend on your screen size and the resolution you are using.
    Certain versions of Netscape do not accept the Hellas Courier for fixed font. To solve the problem with the fixed-size font we recommend that you install the following fixed-size font (226 KB). Installation follows the same steps described above. Consequently you will be able to select Courier Greek.

    If you are using America On Line, as far as we know, it is not possible to change the viewing fonts. The only way to view Greek text correctly if accessing from AOL is to download the files and then use any word processor to read them, after changing the font to an ELOT-928 one. Recently AOL offers the option to use Netscape, which solves the problem with the Greek fonts.

    [02] KEYBOARD FOR WRITING GREEK

    If you want to write Greek text in Windows applications (e.g. word processing) you must have, in addition to the Greek fonts, a keyboard driver, a program that translates the english keyboard in Greek characters based on the ELOT-928 standards. The package wingreek (7KB) offers you this option.

    You must understand that this program, once installed, may cause problems because of the Greek characters to other users which do not expect that. For this reason it is not recommended that you install this driver in computers that are not yours or in computers with many users besides you. In addition you must know that this driver is distributed without the backing of any company, including the companies 'Microsoft' and 'Pouliadis and Associates'.

    The following instructions, as well as the keyboard driver, are provided from the Greek support group of the HR-Net, and are to be used with your own consent and responsibility for strictly academic purposes.

    To install the keyboard :

    1. Copy the file wingreek.exe in a temporary direectory e.g. c:\temp

    2. Decompress this file by double-clicking on it.

    3. From DOS environment (not DOS in Windows) type the following commands, exactly as you see them, each followed by 'enter' : 
       copy c:\windows\system\keyboard.drv c:\windows\system\keyboard.old
 copy c:\temp\kbdgk.drv c:\windows\system\keyboard.drv

    4. Start Windows and launch a word processor. Press simultaneously the keys Alt-Ctrl-Space. Select a Greek font (Hellas Arial) and the letters appear in Greek. Hitting again Alt-Ctrl-Space the letters appear in English. But if you have selected a non-ELOT 928 font (Arial) then instead of the Greek characters you will see the extended ASCII characters between 128 and 255.

    5. Accents are placed if you hit ";" (next to L ) before hitting a vowel. If you hit ";" before a consonant nothing will happen.

    6. Question mark is set with the key "q".
    If you encounter problems with the new driver you can bring the sytem in its previous state by executing the command (from DOS) : 
     copy c:\windows\system\keyboard.old c:\windows\system\keyboard.drv

    [03] SPELL CHECKER FOR GREEK TEXT

    To correct Greek text spelling errors, e.g. search and correction of misspelled Greek words, we offer the package Spell Mate Light 3.1.

    The text must be written in Greek with the ELOT-928 standards. You may download the program files of the Spell Mate Light 3.1, (0.5 MB) and you can install it following these instructions:

    1. Copy the spelight.exe file in a directory of its own, (e.g. c:\spelight).

    2. Decompress the file by double-clicking it, which will conclude the installation.

    You must bear in mind that, as the title suggests, the Spell Mate is 'Light' , in other words some of its features are disabled. For example, it does not work from within an application (example, MS Word), but it corrects the contents of the clipboard, and text written in notepad, i.e. files with extension .txt.
