State Department: Romania - Public Announcement, January 20, 1999

Romania - Public Announcement
January 20, 1999

Large demonstrations of miners from the Jiu Valley in central Romania protesting the governments economic policies have disrupted travel in the counties of Gorj and Valcea, approximately 100 miles west of the capital of Bucharest. Spokesmen for the miners stated in mid-January that they intend to march to the capital, but the speed and path of the demonstrations are unclear.

American citizens planning to travel in the region are advised that disruptions to travel may occur and should avoid the areas where the miners are staging. Persons seeking updates on the situation may contact the consular section of the American Embassy in Bucharest.

For further information regarding Romania consult the Consular Information Sheet for Romania. This Public Announcement expires February 19, 1999.
