State Department: bulgaria - Public Announcement, January 17, 1997

Bulgaria - Public Announcement
January 17, 1997

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman

The American Embassy in Sofia issued the following announcement to Americans in Bulgaria on January 15:

"During recent weeks there have been large public demonstrations in Sofia and other Bulgarian cities. These demonstrations have become a daily affair and are expected to continue. Organizers have called for public participation in daily protests from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Nevski Square in Sofia, though times and places may vary without notice. A demonstration on January 10 involved violent clashes between participants and police. There may also be strikes disrupting some public services. The Embassy advises all Americans to exercise caution and to avoid those areas of Sofia and other cities where demonstrations are likely to occur.

For updated information Americans may contact the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy, located at Number 1 Kapitan Andreev Street, Lozonets, Sofia, telephone 359-2-980-5241, fax 359-2-963-2859."

For further information on travel to Bulgaria, consult the Department of State's latest Consular Information Sheet for Bulgaria.

This Public Announcement will expire on February 7, 1997.
