Top priority issues for the Ministry of Mercantile Marine relating to this important are:
- the continuous upgrading of Hellenic ships safety standards and
- Relevant specifications observance control.
Within the legislative framework, achievement of above set objectives is sought through the harmonisation of National Law with Resolution and Regulation laid down by International Organisations and E.U.
Directives that regulate matters concerning merchant ships construction and equipment such as telecommunications, life-saving and fire-fighting means, carrying- loading/ unloading of dangerous goods, electrical machinery installations, accommodations, hygiene on board ship e.t.c.
- Moreover, intensified inspections carried on board foreign-flag ships calling at Hellenic ports in accordance with the Paris Memorandum Understanding and observation as well Hellenic flag ships surveyed respectively by foreign Port Authorities, also aim at ships safety standards upgrading with a view to reduce the number of substandard ships.
- For the development of a National Vessel Traffic Control System throughout Hellenic territorial waters, a relevant study has been prepared and will be used as the basis during the systems introduction phases.
