Our country takes an active part in International Organisations competent in shipping and international trade related issues and supports and promotes measures and decisions taken for the development of seaborn trade.
OECD
The Organisation's main objective is to maintain a free competitive environment in international sea transport and abolish protectionism. Within the context of the Organisation's Maritime Transport Committee our country has played s decisive role in relative measures taken in order to maintain and further support the principle of free and fair pricing.
UNCTAD
The major event of the last two years in UNCTAD was that the Conference reset its objectives towards a more liberal system. Tzhe Carhagena Conference constituted a very important step in March 1992 when developing countries accepted in principle that no further development could be achieved by pursuing protectionist practices and were also engaged to be gradually adapted to the free market rules.
IMO
Hellas has been playing a leading role within this Organisation, which is a UN body specialised in maritime issues. As a result Hellas has been uniter-ruptedly elected a member of IMO council from 1981 till today. Hellenic position consists in adopting and promoting uniform regulations necessary for international shipping unlike regional or unilateral rules which create unstable conditions in international shipping. As IMO resolutions are internationally implemented this provides a regulation context generally accepted which will have a most positive effect on shipping development now and in the future.
