In 1987, in the ministry of Mercantile Marine, started to operate the Piraeus Joint RCC which was the successor of Operational Centre and whose staff was elected among Hellenic Coast Guard and National Air Force specialised personnel the Piraeus Joint RCC has the following scope:
It coordinates and rescue action when in corner to dealing with marine casualties and air-crashes occurring within or near the country's responsibility area.
When an incident occurs beyond its responsibility area, it initially assumes responsibility if it is the first to receive a distress call among other RCC, until the competent RCC is informed and takes action.
It cooperates with foreign competent RCC and is involved in monitoring and action taken to deal with casualties involving Hellenic owned or Hellenic flag ships occurring beyond its responsibility area.
It coordinates action aimed at transporting ill injured persons by sea and assists National Emergency Centre in its task when a patient in an island is to be transported by sea.
Recently the Piraeus RCC was modernised and equipped with modern telecommunication means in order to operate effectively and carry out its task. During its operation the Piraeus RCC has performed its study which has been largely recognised by the shipping community and has carried out many successful rescue operations.
