COMMUNIST PARTY SECRETARY-GENERAL: GOODYEAR PLANT SHOULD REOPEN

Thessaloniki, September 10 (M.P.A.)

Aleka Paparega, the Secretary-General of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), lamented the closing of Thessaloniki's Goodyear tire-making plant, after she met with the laid-off workers outside the factory's premises in Sindos.

Ms. Paparega stated that the factory shoud re-open and promised the jobless workers that their demands will be given her party's support and stated that, until the problem is resolved, the Goodyear former employees should be given posts in the public or private sectors.

Ms. Paparega criticised the government for not having had the hindsight to safeguard against the closing of profitable operations.

"Up to date, only losing businesses closed," she commented. "Now, profitable ones are closng too."
