Greece urges more active EU involvement in Cyprus efforts
Speaking after meeting with the EU Portuguese presidency’s special representative for Cyprus, Mr Leonardo Matias, Alternate Foreign Minister Mr Christos Rokfyllos stressed the need for the European Union to become more actively involved in efforts to find a solution to the division and occupation of Cyprus.
The Alternate Minister outlined the Greek stance on Cyprus’ accession process and asked Ambassador Matias to relay to the EU Presidency the need for the EU’s more active participation.
The Greek minister stressed the need for all activity by international factors – and particularly by the EU – to be conducted within the framework of United Nations Security Council Resolutions. These resolutions set out clearly, among other, the need for the consolidation of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with one sovereignty, guaranteed territoriall integrity and independence.
